Amazon.com Product Description

With Swarovski Optik spotting scopes, you'll always have a balcony view. The Swarovski ATS 80 HD spotting scope, for instance, offers such features as outstanding long-distance focusing, high light transmission, and ultra-high magnification power, turning every observation into an adventure. The aluminum ATS 80 features a large 80mm objective lens diameter, letting you observe objects in razor-sharp detail thanks to the scope's excellent light-gathering qualities, which work beautifully even at high magnifications. Every bit as important are the fluoride-containing HD lenses, which minimize color fringing (chromatic aberration) and deliver high-contrast images with precise outlines. The HD lenses are terrific for regular viewing, but they're particularly valuable for digital photographers who want to take pictures through the spotting scope. And because of the scope's angled design, it's eminently suitable for birdwatching at different heights, such as in the air or in the trees.

Each spotting scope in the Swarovski Optik collection is well built and protected from scratches or dents. The scopes' enhanced Swarodur or Swarotop coatings guarantee lifelike color reproduction and outstanding image brightness even at dusk. The scopes also feature a nonstick Swaroclean coating on the outer surface of each lens. The coating--which helps extend the lifespan of your lens--is particularly effective when you need to remove dried-on mineral residues (such as water marks from condensation), insect repellents, and tree resin. Finally, each Swarovski scope boasts a rubber armoring that protects against shock and noise. Dustproof, waterproof, and submersible to 13 feet, the ATS 80 HD spotting scope carries a lifetime warranty. Swarovski eyepieces are sold separately.

Swarovski's high-contrast HD spotting scopes are ideal for color-rich digital photography.

About Swarovski Optik
Although founded in 1949, Swarovski Optik's roots actually trace all the way back to 1895, when Austrian Daniel Swarovski--who invented the world's first electric grinding machine for jewelry stones--established the family-owned Swarovski Crystal in the province of Tyrol. Since then, the name Swarovski has become synonymous worldwide with the clearest crystal, precision grinding, and a brilliant spirit of innovation, as the original enterprise continued branching out into additional lines of business.

Swarovski Optik owes its rise to Wilhelm Swarovski, son of the original founder and an avid hobby astronomer, who decided to build his own improved binocular in 1935 at a mere 17 years of age. With access to the specialized glass production and finishing technologies already used to manufacture jewelry stones in his father's factory, Wilhelm managed to develop a novel prism fabrication and grinding process that he applied in constructing his first 6x30 binocular. Wilhelm went on to found Swarovski Optik KG in Absam, Tyrol, in 1949, thus laying the foundation for a sports optics company with a global reputation. His company's first serial product, the Habicht 7x42, is still an industry standard in the field of hunting optics and continues to be produced in the best tradition of its founder.

5.0 out of 5 stars Swarovski HD-ATS 80, December 15, 2009
This review is from: Swarovski Spotting Scope HD-ATS 80 High Definition Glass (Sports)
For nearly 30 years, I used a Swift 15-60x scope (my first scope), primarily, but not solely, for birding. There was a even some astronomy thrown in for good measure. It was a good scope at the time, and more than adequate but, in the past few years and particularly when I had a chance to use it side-by-side with the 'top end' scopes, it paled in comparison. Therefore, I have some experience with Swarovski, Nikon, and other excellent spotting scopes, having had the chance to use them at the same time.

My Swift scope dropped off of what I found out to be a faulty tripod bracket last February, and broke, so it made it easier to justify looking for a new scope.

I researched scopes for many weeks prior to purchasing this one and had a chance to try out several. In the end, it was obvious (at least to me) that the scope that so many top birders used was the best choice for me, and for good reason. This is not a small amount of money to part with on a whim so the research was fully warranted.

This is a beautifully made instrument. It's tight and well finished with excellent attention to detail. The optics are just about as good as they come and it's ergonomics are excellent...that is, it's very easy to use. Everything is in what feels to be the right place to make use in the field a pleasure. The image is bright and crisp, and the field is wide, even when zoomed in at 60x. And using it with glasses is absolutely fine. There is really no loss of field due to excellent eye relief with the 20-60x zoom lens. This spotting scope is top-of-the-line in all ways. An excellent instrument to make an enjoyable pastime even better.

I was able to find the discontinued case for it at an excellent price. I feel this is a very needed item when you're out on a beach, or in damp or unsteady conditions. It will protect the scope well but, at the same time, allow for full operation.

Was it worth the money? In my opinion the answer is 'absolutely'! This scope has a great warranty and should last for decades. I am very happy with this decision.

All my birder friends have scope-envy. It's relatively lightweight, considering its power, which is terrific.
