The Swatch TDA03 digital answering machine is sleek and simple, with features that are remarkably easy to learn. Its plug-and-play design combined with voice-guided instructions make setup a breeze. The TDA03 can store two separate outgoing messages up to 60 seconds. Pressing the OGM1 button plays either your voice or a prerecorded prompt that tells callers to leave a message at the tone. The OGM2 button will activate an alternate message, such as "the office is closed from 12 to 1 for lunch," and does not permit the caller to leave a message.

Using its programmable date/time stamp, the TDA03 can automatically record the day and time that each message was received. It also features up to 18 minutes of digital recording time for incoming messages at up to 2 minutes per individual call. In our tests, the sound quality was good for both incoming and outgoing messages. However, the recording microphone is subject to background noise and hiss, and we had to stand no more than about 6 inches from the machine in a room with no background noise to get the best recording.

With the TDA03's remote-inquiry function, you can check messages, switch your mailbox on and off, or record updated outgoing messages. Setting up the remote-access code is easy, and a handy wallet-size card reminds you of frequently used options.

The Swatch Record comes ready to go--just plug it in and you're ready to record incoming phone messages. The Swatch Record includes the day and time with each message, so you'll know not only who called but also when. A high sample rate of 12 kilobits per second (4.8 kilobits per second is the standard) means that the machine will record your messages and play them back with great sound quality.

Additional features of the Swatch Record include the ability to record two outgoing messages of up to one minute each; record incoming messages of up to two minutes; record a memo of one or two minutes; delete all or delete one message; be operated remotely with a code; and be set to answer on two rings or four rings or in a toll-saver mode.

This unit also has an answer-only mode; a two-digit LED message counter; playback, skip back, skip forward, and fast playback functions; a volume control; and a 9-volt backup battery (included) for power failures. I was in the market for a new message machine, since my 1990 AT&T tape machine broke. Sound quality, above all, was the most important quality for me. I scoured the web for something that would get the job done -- the Swatch seemed to fit the bill. Not so. I am appauled with the sound quality. It is very bad. Both the outgoing and incoming messages are muddy. Don't confuse volume for clarity. The volume can reach high levels, which is nice. However, because the messagesare so muddy, it is very difficult to hear what is being said, despite playing it at a high volume. I can't believe that some company can't manufacture a DIGITAL answering machine that is high quality, and sounds as good, or better than a tape machine. I'm willing to pay for one if it exists. Sadly, the Swatch is not that machine, and I CANNOT recommend it to anyone.

It sounds like an answering machine, not like voice mail. The accent is a cute touch. I haven't had any trouble retrieving messages remotely.
