4.0 out of 5 stars Great Discipline Options, April 22, 2009

This review is from: Don't Swear with Your Mouth Full! When conventional discipline fails unconventional children (Paperback)
A very thoughtfull, logical book. I am sick of people telling me just to be firm and put my child in a time-out when they misbehave. For my children, that just does not work. Dr. Chugh explains why it does not work. Hallelujah! When I started using Dr. Chugh's techniques it was truly like magic. He explains why his techniques work and why others do not. It makes perfect sense. While the book is thin on providing an overall parenting style for your kids. His specific discipline techniques make the book well worth the price.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great resource for parents with challenging/inflexible/controlling kids, April 21, 2009
By
This review is from: Don't Swear with Your Mouth Full! When conventional discipline fails unconventional children (Paperback)
This book provides a wonderful overview of the various temperaments/personality traits that a child may display from birth, which have nothing to do with parenting style. This book refocuses parents' efforts into cultivating and "using" a child's challenging/controlling temperament rather than fighting it or attempting to change the child. Rather than battling with your child to sit in time out, Dr. Chugh provides concrete examples of an alternative approach which makes much more sense. This book is a quick and helpful resource for parents/teachers/etc looking for a more effective approach to disciplining children.

5.0 out of 5 stars This book makes sense, March 18, 2009
This review is from: Don't Swear with Your Mouth Full! When conventional discipline fails unconventional children (Paperback)
This book explains the why and the how for parents and it does this in a friendly, fun way. Dr. Chugh has integrated his own likable personal style into to his understanding of child behavior. He then takes you, as the reader (and parent looking for guidance), through behavior strategies for your child. It is all done in a clear understandable manner that FITS with a firm, fair, and loving parenting style.

5.0 out of 5 stars Happy House!, November 29, 2010
This review is from: Don't Swear with Your Mouth Full! When conventional discipline fails unconventional children (Paperback)
This book has brought the joy back in our house! Instead of trying to play a battle of wills with our strong willed child, we have learned how to work with him and his personality to get the discipline solutions we were looking for while keeping everyone happy. The ideas make sense and are clearly explained as well as laying out the research behind them and why they work. I think this book should be a must read for anyone with kids. Even "angel" children will benefit from many of the discipline techniques discussed as it focuses on modifying long term behavior, not just short term solutions.

5.0 out of 5 stars It works!!, December 21, 2009

This review is from: Don't Swear with Your Mouth Full! When conventional discipline fails unconventional children (Paperback)
We have a 4yr old boy who is the definition of the "difficult child." He tries to control virtually every situation he encounters. The methodology outlined in this book has been a heaven-sent for our family. Not only does our son "get it," but he ends up learning the right thing to do as well. As Dr. Chugh explains, that is where so many other parenting techniques fail miserably -- they may punish the bad behavior, but they barely ever teach the right behavior. God bless Dr. Cary Chugh!

5.0 out of 5 stars A wonderful, empowering book for parents, April 18, 2009

This review is from: Don't Swear with Your Mouth Full! When conventional discipline fails unconventional children (Paperback)
As a psychologist and the mother of a preschooler, I keep my eyes open for books to help make discipline smoother, more educational, and less disruptive and upsetting for both me and my kid. So I was delighted when I found this book (especially after finding that conventional time outs accomplished very little with my child--except that he liked to pretend to put me in time out). This is a wonderful, truly innovative book. Dr. Chugh has deep and important insights into how to make discipline truly work (whether your child is or is not particularly difficult). Dr. Chugh's realization that behavior-limited punishments are much more effective than conventional time-limited punishments is brilliant. Each chapter lists helpful "take-home" points. I highly recommend this book.
