5.0 out of 5 stars Surprising results!
With three acres and six garden areas, I was over run with moles. I bought a set of Sonic spikes at a local store in desperation, we had hundreds of tunnels by the beginning of March. I was sure I was wasting my time but not my money as I knew I could return them. I saw my new 100 Daffodil bulb area, planted in the fall was getting damaged so I placed one spike nearby. I...

These mole stakes are absolutely worthless and definitely not worth the $30+ price tag not to mention the extra $10 you'll waste in batteries that you can't return. They claim to drive away moles and gophers within 14 days of installation. I gave them 21 days before completely giving up and returning them. If anything, the mole activity increased after installing the...

This review is from: Sweeney's 9012 Mole and Gopher Twin Pack Sonic Spikes (Lawn & Patio)
I walked on the tunnels in a 20 foot circle to see if there would be more activity and also between the grape vines and a garden site.

Me and my brother were very surprised to see no new tunnels in the last 3 weeks in maybe a 30 foot circle around each spike. I have come to Amazon to buy more spikes as the local farm store is out of them.
You have to make a hole in the ground to insert the spikes and I could see them being easily damaged if forced. These spikes are great, I did not have to poison or kill them and that makes me feel good.

They claim to drive away moles and gophers within 14 days of installation. I gave them 21 days before completely giving up and returning them. I have a semi-wooded ˝ acre lot and end up doing battle with the moles every year, but they have been the absolute worst in 2008! I figured I'd try the sonic spikes this year as I have a friend who swears by them. Unfortunately that wasn't my experience and after reading several reviews of similar products, the Sweeney's Mole and Gopher Spikes appear to be equally as worthless as all of the other brands.

I'm going back to my old standby, Juicy Fruit Gum. Follow the mole run and make a small hole every 10 feet or so. Drop in a fresh stick and cover the hole. The next time the little bugger goes down his run, he'll eat the gum and die because he can't digest it. It's much cheaper than sonic spikes and pesticides, less of a pain than traps, and has been the most effective thing for me at significantly decreasing the mole activity.

5.0 out of 5 stars Get rid of gophers, September 18, 2010

These things were easy to put together and seemed to have worked like a charm. I am not gonna lie, they are hard to dig and place, in really hard soil you have to work to get enough of a hole to put them underground, but once they are taken care of and in the ground they work. There is a high pitched whine as they go off, but if you bury them it isn't like you hear it often or even at all unless you are right next to them. They are one afternoon (if that) worth of work and then forget about them. Easy and quick and take care of the problem without traps that you have to clean up or cages that you have to get rid of.

Good luck!

I bought the two pack of Sweeney's Gopher Sonic Spikes
as I did not want to use poisons or traps.

I was so wonderfully surprised!!!! Within one week all
the gophers were gone and my yard was back to normal!!

I would highly recommend these!! I put brand new good quality
batteries in and that has been 3 months ago and they are still
working strong.

Thank You Sweeney's for the great product!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Mole Stakes Do Work, but not at first....., August 18, 2009
This review is from: Sweeney's 9012 Mole and Gopher Twin Pack Sonic Spikes (Lawn & Patio)
The Sweeney mole stakes work, but the problem is that for the first couple of weeks you will actually attract more moles; this is because moles, at first, sense the vibrations as "grub" movement (worms, etc.) a food source. When they figure out that this is not the case, they move out.
Remember to replace batteries every four months, so moles don't return.

5.0 out of 5 stars Moles for years, but not anymore!, July 23, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Sweeney's 9012 Mole and Gopher Twin Pack Sonic Spikes (Lawn & Patio)
This sonic spike first drove the moles out of my front yard largely indicative was the fact that my ankles were not being twisted by the mole runs. Two new spring-loaded traps in one neighbors yard also supported our findings. That is why we purchased an additional four traps. Installed two in flower beds. One spike was dug around by some critter to a depth of 5-6" and a diameter of 6-7". We think that moles don't like them. Hooray!

4.0 out of 5 stars My moles checked out and haven't come back., March 18, 2011

I've had a slight mole issue probably every summer. Not crazy bad. A few runs here and there. Enough that is was tearing up the yard more than I wanted.

I put these in last summer after I started seeing several longer mole runs. My Mom had them and recommended them to me. I didn't really want to try and poison anything. Little kids around - and I don't have a fence.

I installed four - one on each side of the house. My yard is just normal sized. I stepped the mole runs flat and I didn't see anymore evidence of any mole activity after that. So, for me, they worked. I know they work better or worse depending on your soil type. I know you need to get them fully in the ground with just the yellow cap above ground. I know placement is important and that they only have a certain range. I guess, if they work - they're great. If they don't - they're junk.

Directions said to take them out of the ground during winter. I didn't. Too lazy. And we had really pretty bad winter in the mid-west. Well, its warming up and I go outside and I can still hear all 4 quietly buzzing in the ground.

The toughest part for me was just getting them in the ground. I know you can't pound them in. Plastic is too weak for that. If the ground is really wet - you can stick a metal pole like a tire iron or broom stick in the ground and make larger and larger circles with it until the hole is big enough. The broom stick will break if the ground isn't soft enough. I'll replace the old batteries this Spring and hope they continue to work.

If not, I read the first review and liked the gum idea - if that's true.

Update: Jan 20th, 2012. Zero moles last year.

I purchased and installed these per directions. If anything, they drew more moles and volles. I did everything the instructions said. They are no more than an alleged high tech rip-off. Could not get a refund. SAVE your money!

1.0 out of 5 stars I got one season out of them!, June 28, 2011
This review is from: Sweeney's 9012 Mole and Gopher Twin Pack Sonic Spikes (Lawn & Patio)
After spending the big bucks on gopher control the devices seemed to work well in the first year. The second year I went to replace the batteries and found they completed failed to start their sonic pinging. I have contacted the company and am waiting for a response. I will repost if they make good on their 5 year warranty.

1.0 out of 5 stars Get a Nash trap instead, August 28, 2011
This review is from: Sweeney's 9012 Mole and Gopher Twin Pack Sonic Spikes (Lawn & Patio)
I gave a pair of these things about 3 weeks to work and did not notice any reduction in mole activity. I started using a Nash trap and caught 2 moles within 10 feet of the Sonic Spike in the first week. Do not waste you time or money on the Sonic Spikes.
