Consider: They tied the Major League record with 116 regular season victories, equaling the 1906 Chicago Cubs. They also established a new American League record, eclipsing the 114 wins by the 1998 Yankees. The Mariners were the first team since 1948 to lead the league in batting, pitching, and fielding. Their 59-22 road record was the best in the game (It was also better than any other team's home record). During the final week of the season, the Mariners reached 71 games over .500, the frist team to do so since the 1906 Cubs. Seattle hosted the 72nd All-Star Game, and the 8 Mariners who were on the squad were the most by any team in 41 years. Ichiro broke Shoeless Joe Jackson's 90-year old record for hits by a rookie with 242. It was the most hits in a season since 1930. With a .350 average, Ichio became the first rookie to win a batting title since Tony Oliva in 1964. Bret Boone set American League records for second basemen, with 37 home runs, and a league leading 141 RBIs. The fans of the Northwest were also stars in 2001. As the Major League Leaders, over 3.5 million filled beautiful SAFECO Field. From April to October, the Mariners amazed the baseball world with a relentless pursuit of perfection and the American League West Division Championship.
