1.0 out of 5 stars Cheesy
Sweet Sixteen was Cheesy with a capital C. It was a lame teenage imatation of A Christmas Carol and totally predictable. I totally adore fluffy teen chic lit and that was what I was expecting from this book, but Kate Brian tried to "teach" teenagers something about life. While the message was good the way she went about it bored me... I mean ghosts? giving all your...

Teagan Phillips may be known as the epitome of the perfect girl. However, she is also viewed by her classmates and neighbors as being not only obnoxiously rich, but obnoxiously pretty, fashionable, and smart. And this year, Teagan's obnoxious level is only going to increase, thanks to the fact that she is turning 16, and planning a Sweet 16 party that will blow every other Sweet 16 party out of the water, and make her the most talked-about girl for years to come. As the night of Teagan's Sweet 16 approaches, nothing works out for the Princess. And, within a short amount of time, a series of unfortunate events - spilled food, no alcohol, matching dresses, identical shoes, backstabbing friends, and more - take place, leading Teagan on a hunt for booze that leaves her lying on the concrete floor of a wine cellar - out cold. When she finally awakens, Teagan finds herself face to face with a strange woman. A strange woman who possesses a slew of powers, that take the spoiled, ungrateful, nasty Teagan back in time, to when she was the innocent little girl who was the apple of her father, and - deceased - mother's eye. A time before her father started ignoring her, by throwing himself into his work. It is during this time that Teagan must truly observe the error of her ways, and make a huge change - one that should have been made much sooner than this Sweet 16.

Kate Brian is one of the most imaginative teen fiction writers out there at the moment; and her imagination truly flourishes within the pages of her newest novel SWEET 16. SWEET 16 combines the elements of MTV's hit TV show MY SUPER SWEET 16, with Charles Dickens' A CHRISTMAS CAROL, in an attempt to create a magical tale of adventure and gossip, that takes one very ungrateful teenage girl on the thrill ride of her life. Teagan is the girl you love to hate, whose life seems picture-perfect and fabulous by outward appearances, but is truly unstable - at least according to her - once you penetrate the bubble. Her attitude will make readers want to hate her, but the sadness she experiences each day of her life, in memories of her mother, truly make you want to embrace her. Kate Brian has created an extremely enjoyable, heartfelt novel, that leaves room for a sequel; and, with the outcome of SWEET 16, readers will be more than happy to read more of Teagan's story in the future. An amazing novel that will truly give readers a better outlook on life - and how they are viewed by others.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Sweet 16 to Remember, December 20, 2008
This review is from: Sweet 16 (Paperback)
I really liked this book! It was a fun and easy read I finished in one sitting. Not only was the story cute and heart-warming/breaking (at times), it had realistic aspects of teenage life.

The story begins on the morning of Teagan's sixteenth birthday party. She wakes up to rain, a stomach ache, and her usual negative/spoiled attitude. The first half of the book, Teagan goes through her day up to her party. She is not happy. She is not nice. She is miserable. "Tragedy" strikes, and Teagan finds herself alone and stumbling into unconsciousness. Then, the story picks up the Christmas Carol angle. Teagan is brought back to many different birthday scenarios of past, present, and future, being led by a quirky ghost.

Since the book is mostly about Teagan, and only really goes through one day, only Teagan is well-developed. The side characters are fun, though. I really liked her step-mom and a couple of her friends.

When I finished, I wanted more. I really enjoyed this book and actually got more than I expected. I would recommend this book to anyone looking for a cute and sweet teen chick lit book. I really like this author (and her Megan Meade's Guide to the McGowen Boys, too)and look forward to reading more books by her.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sweet Sixteen, October 29, 2007
This review is from: Sweet 16 (Hardcover)
Have you ever wonder what your sweet sixteen will be like. Well read along in this amazing novel written by Kate Brian, as she takes us into a whole new different world. In this book, a girl name Tegan Phillips is turning sixteen and she wants to have the best party ever. She is the most stylish and selfish girl in Upper Sheridan, Pennsylvania. She has the most coolest stuff, cutest boyfriend, and the best Dj ever for her party. Her party starts out wonderful until she hears that the wine bar was canceled, making her very angry, but it made her even more angry hearing that her dad canceled it. She runs off, and finds a door with wine cellar written on it, and decides to go in there. In that room, many things happen, things that mad her party the most sweetest sweet sixteen of all. I would recommend this book to anyone, because it shows a lot about a life of a girl that got a little out of hand. It kept my attention a lot, because it starts out with everything before her party, then having a little twist in the middle of her party, and ending with the most wonderful party ever. This book was very interesting to me, because I saw how a girl can change just because of forgetting about her past. It made me realize a lot of things that I have forgotton about my past. Everything that you do now can effect you so much in the future, but you just have to be careful about what you do, make sure your making the right decisions, and to never forget about all the good times you have in your past. Read this book and see what you can learn from it, and always to remember that you should never judge a book by its cover.

5.0 out of 5 stars Really Good Book, August 22, 2007
A Kid's Review
This review is from: Sweet 16 (Hardcover)
This book was very funny to read about a spoiled girl getting a visit from a ghost to see her past and future if she doesn't change herself. It was a nice read and I recommend it to teenagers that would love to read a likable book that would give you a great moral.

4.0 out of 5 stars Reviewed by Amy Ryder, January 26, 2007
This review is from: Sweet 16 (Hardcover)
Teagan's the kind of girl who won't talk to the shampoo girl at the salon and loves to get waiters fired, who will ditch her loyal childhood friend on her birthday to spend a day at the mall with the school's most popular size-two social climbers. She's been given everything and she's never grateful. Feel free to hate her. She's a bitch, and she's only 15.

If you've ever watched MTV's ridiculous (and kind of addictive) TV show My Super Sweet 16, you're familiar with the initial premise of this book. Teagan is turning 16, and she's having a blowout worthy of Paris Hilton: partying at Daddy's country club in a custom-made Vera Wang gown and Jimmy Choo shoes, snacking on filet mignon and gourmet hors d'ouvres passed by waiters in Gucci sunglasses, surrounded by her popular friends and super-hot boyfriend.

The party doesn't go exactly according to plan: in a search for alcohol, Teagan falls down a set of basement stars and hits her head. She is visited by a spirit, a la Christmas Carol or It's a Wonderful Life, and travels to her past, present and future. While this gimmick has been done with every archetype in literature, not since Scrooge himself has a character needed it more.

With the huge success of Gossip Girl, The A-List, and all the clones has come a backlash to the materialism and excess portrayed by that type of book. Enter Sweet 16, the perfect compromise. The GG audience will read for the sex, drugs, and name-dropping; their mothers will love the positive message. Kate Brian is a giant in the teen chick lit market, and she's going to have another hit with Sweet 16.
