In The Rose Legacy, Carina DiGratia Shephard barely escaped the hangman's noose thanks to her new husband, Quillan. Unfortunately, she's had a hard time showing her appreciation because he left Crystal, CO, almost as soon as he could get his freight wagons hitched up. In the months that he has been gone, Carina's appreciation and fledgling love have almost dried up, and she is relying on her faith in God to keep her going as she redirects her energy into a new businessAan Italian restaurant. Quillan is drawn to Carina but fears that his questionable past and lack of faith will impede their happiness together. He therefore revisits his past, hoping to make peace with his future by coming to terms with his abusive foster parents, and he discovers a new belief in God. But it may have come too late, as trouble at his mine, the New Boundless, almost kills Carina. Heitzmann's adventurous Westerns (e.g., the "Rocky Mountain Legacy" series) provide a crossover appeal with historical romances and belong on the shelves next to Stephen Bly and Brock Thoene.
