The Proposition

While seeing his town through a life-threatening crisis, Prosperino mayor Michael Longstreet faced his own crisis -- his powerful family was demanding that he produce a bride! Only Suzanne Jorgenson was desperate enough to enter into this hasty arrangement. Because this raven-haired beauty needed a husband to get custody of the child she'd lost long ago. But once Michael sealed their pact with a kiss, the fire that had always sparked between them became a four-alarm blaze. And that changed everything. Because Suzanne was now about to become his bride in every way!

More About the Author

USAToday and Kindle bestselling author of 28 novels in romance and women's fiction, a three-time RITA finalist and Romantic Times BOOKReviews Career Achievement Award winner, Jean Brashear knows a lot about taking crazy chances. A lifelong avid reader, at the age of forty-five with no experience and no training, she decided to see if she could write a book. It was a wild leap that turned her whole life upside down, but she would tell you that though she's never been more terrified, she's never felt more exhilarated or more alive. She's an ardent proponent of not putting off your dreams until that elusive 'someday'--take that leap now.

What They're Saying about The Goddess of Fried Okra:

"Jean Brashear's distinctive storytelling voice instantly draws in the reader. She writes with warmth and emotional truth. The depth of her understanding of human nature marks her as a writer to watch, a writer to read and a writer to enjoy."~#1 New York Times bestselling author Debbie Macomber

"Jean Brashear's wholly original, funny and poignant novel has a heart as big as Texas. Told in a warm and intimate voice, it's like a road trip with your best friend. Don't miss it!" ~#1 New York Times bestselling author Susan Wiggs

"Jean Brashear has that "it" factor. She is an incredibly talented writer who can hit every note with enough clarity to bring the reader tears, laughter, or just, "Oh, my, this is an amazing story." THE GODDESS OF FRIED OKRA is stunning, powerful and raw. Pea is on a journey to heal herself, and find herself--and you will want to go with her to find her dear, dead sister--I do." ~New York Times bestselling author Stella Cameron

"With characters full of heart...and vinegar, Jean Brashear takes us on a road trip through the back doors of modern life. And we get to read every hysterical marker on the way." ~ USAToday bestselling author Pamela Morsi

"THE GODDESS OF FRIED OKRA is a poignant journey of one woman's search for a place to belong. The characters are as delightful and engaging as can be found between the pages of a book, and the book itself is a road map to happiness - something for which everybody yearns." ~New York Times bestselling author Sharon Sala

"A wonderfully engaging story of one woman's search for self. Jean Brashear tugs on your heartstrings and won't let go." ~New York Times bestselling author Julia London

"THE GODDESS OF FRIED OKRA is a fabulous read. Riveting. Original. Those characters grabbed my imagination and didn't let go." ~New York Times bestselling author Cathy Maxwell

4.0 out of 5 stars :), February 7, 2004
This review is from: Sweet Child of Mine (Mass Market Paperback)
SWEET CHILD OF MINE
Mayor Michael Longstreet has his hands full trying to keep the citizens of Prosperino from panicking. The water at the Hopechest ranch has been contaminated and children are getting sick. If the contamination reaches the towns water supply there could be a major crisis. As if that were not enough for Michael to worry about, his family is demanding that he find himself a bride. Michael loves his mom and his deathly ill father, but he never planned to get married again. Michael was married once and his wife and unborn baby died and he blames himself for their death. No, Michael was never getting married again. At least that was what he thought until he heard Suzanne Jorgenson's own personal crisis.

Suzanne was a counselor at Hopechest ranch and is passionate about her work. Often she finds herself butting heads with the Mayor. Suzanne often leads with her heart and lets her temper get the best of her. But now Suzanne needs help and the last person she expects to help her is the Mayor himself. Suzanne gave up her son for adoption ten years ago, but now has the chance to get him back. The only thing that Suzanne has to do to get her son is to get married.

Michael needs a wife to make his dying father happy and Suzanne needs a husband to get her son. Michael and Suzanne decide to get married for the sake of the people they love. Even before they tie the knot it is a toss up whether it will be a marriage made in heaven or hell. These two are constantly at each others throat. The sexual tension between them is obvious to everyone including them. It is just a matter of time until they give in to the feelings they have for one another. If you are not interested in reading all of the book in the Colton series that is fine this one stands on its own. I would, however, recommend that you read Protecting Peggy since it is directly related to the mystery surrounding the contaminated water.

3.0 out of 5 stars Just a note . . ., February 3, 2005
This review is from: Sweet Child of Mine (Mass Market Paperback)
The plot's already been nicely summarized for this book, so I'll just add that I was disappointed with two things: first, it is terribly predictable and formulaic. Not a single surprise anywhere. Second, it was a let-down after reading the much-more-enjoyable "A Hasty Wedding." In Brashear's book, Blake Fallon (the hero of "A Hasty Wedding") comes off as something of a jerk. I guess that is one pitfall of continuities by different authors, though. I was also surprised at just how uninteresting the minor characters were here.

4.0 out of 5 stars Michael and Suzanne-SPOILERS, May 30, 2006
By
Amanda Brooks (Los Angeles, CA USA) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This review is from: Sweet Child of Mine (Mass Market Paperback)
Favorite scene with Suzanne-
Her talk with Jim about Bobby.

Favorite scene with Michael-
Their fight, Suzanne telling him his dead wife would be ashamed of him. His reaction was so powerful.

Together-
With Bobby before he goes into his operation.

What did you like about Suzanne-
Her strength. Her love for Bobby. The girl next door. All the kids at the ranch loved her.

What didn't you like about Suzanne-
She was a little too weak and sensitive for such a tough cookie. She wanted things her way, not willing to allow Michael to grieve.

What did you like about Michael-
Helping Suzanne and her little boy. Putting the town first.

What didn't you like about Michael-
Although he had every right to grieve, he wouldn't stop letting Suzanne know that. He kept telling her there was no room for her.

If I had to cast Michael, I'd cast Julian McMahon.
If I had to cast Suzanne, I'd cast Holly Marie Combs.
