Review

Teresa Shields Parker is a gifted writer and story teller. 'Sweet Grace' is the compelling story of one woman's journey into morbid obesity and out again.

Teresa shares with warmth and honesty how she was able to confront her compulsive overeating and sugar addiction head on to find freedom in body, soul and spirit.

As she learned to lose the excuses, stop hiding and face the truth, she was released to finally desire health and wholeness more than she craved sugar.

Throughout the book, Teresa encourages us to take action and make positive changes. Perhaps to this point, you have felt powerless to make the changes you know are essential to your freedom.

As you read this book you'll discover how to tap into the power of the Holy Spirit who indwells us, always ready and available to help us clean up the mess of our lives. Get ready to find freedom and enter into the flow of God's unforced rhythms of grace!
--Dianne Wilson, Author, Body & Soul

"Sweet Grace," is a book about freedom. It's one woman's journey to beat her addiction to sugar. While there are places that help drug and alcohol addictions, the same is not true for those who are addicted to sugar. Basically, you're on your own. Till now.

Teresa Shields Parker talks about her addiction which led to her being morbidly obese. Though she tried one type of plan after another she failed.

"No amount of tugging at the chains that bound me could set me free. It seemed to be a task too big even for God." And then she went to a seminar.

"On that day, in that seminar, I realized I had gold at my core. I had hidden it by years of muck and dirt, but it was there waiting to be found and set free from its prison."

She realized she was the one making choices. "Every bite I put in my mouth and every time I chose unhealthy food over what I knew to be a better choice was entirely my choice."

She realized she was not alone in this struggle.

"God's grace was there all the time, but I was going to food instead of Him. The minute I admitted my failure and asked for forgiveness, I allowed His grace to flood my life."

Now you can read about her journey. How she lost 250 pounds and got her life back. How she is enjoying the abundant life God talks about in the Bible. Not only will you see the obstacles she faced, but you'll get the firsthand account of her victory. This is NOT a diet book. It's the memoir of a person just like you. A person who used food for comfort.

But it's also a book of encouragement. Words of hope from a person who admits it's a struggle, who admits she could not do it without God's help in making difficult choices.

This book is a rare glimpse into the secret Life of a Super Morbidly Obese person. How does a person get that overweight? How and why does a 430 lb person keep eating? This book lets you inside food addiction and you realize the dynamics of addiction are very similar regardless of the substance one is addicted to. Addictions affect the family and have similar psychological mechanisms; denial, rationalization, blame, and victimization. There is a lot of painful self-examination looking for why; Mom’s mental illness, an inappropriate touch of s trusted adult? This recovery story is an exploration of faith and personal responsibility. Every addiction ends in one of two ways death or recovery. Sometimes recovery begins when death is staring you in the face. Cardiologists and 3 year olds are real honest with food addicts; they both will tell you if you need to lose weight. Teresa and I stumbled upon similar diets; we both avoid sugar. Sugar cookies and yeast rolls are not inherently bad, just like alcohol is not inherently bad. But 24 cookies or 24 beers in 24 hours is bad. Recovery starts when we acknowledge there are certain foods we cannot consume in moderation. I don’t want to give away the ending to a good book but, it turns out the secret really is healthy eating and exercise.

I selected this book thinking it would be a typical weight loss self-help program. It's not. It is a woman's life story battling super-morbid obesity, and trying to live up to unrealistic self expectations caused by a traumatic childhood, and a fear of not being good enough. It's also how hidden food allergies and addiction to sugar helped her unwittingly sabotage all of her efforts to take control of her weight loss. But most importantly, it's her unique story of powerful life change. Sweet Grace is a spiritual reflection of how a mature woman revisits childhood growing up in a good family, but suffering under a mother's mental illness. Teresa Shields Parker reveals the hidden pain of childhood's innocence stolen, and her personal security robbed after being physically molested and traumatized with no one to help her. Parker frankly shares her emotional and spiritual struggle of self-medicating and empowering herself with food. Unfortunately, the foods she used like an alcoholic covered her in layers of fat. A capable writer, I found her story riveting, and would recommend it for all women, especially for any woman who grew up believing we should know it all, have it all and do it all. Teresa tried! And often succeeded. But her body paid the price of the physical and emotional stress she tried to carry, and the hidden food secrets became the driving force in her life until 430 pounds of fat threatened to stop her beating heart. A good Christian girl, wife and mother, Teresa couldn't hide her size, but she hid her compulsions from friends and family, then worked harder at home, office and church to make up for her sins. She was a dieting pro. Like many of us she lost and gained hundreds of pounds in her lifetime. Even weight loss surgery didn't help this woman in her efforts to appease her god. Her book tells you what did-- How an empty woman finally felt full, and learned to face the addictive nature of her secret stash.

I found Teresa's personal story to be a revealing image of food addiction. As someone who is overweight and who has both succeeded and failed various diets, I could relate to her experience. Although I don't have the compulsive behaviors which Teresa shared, I do share some of her emotional struggles. Now that I've read her book, I find myself wondering if I actually need to treat my weight as an addiction rather than just a willpower issue. Teresa offers a free bible study which I plan to go through. In my opinion, Sweet Grace, was an okay read - personal enough, not too intellectual, and offers some advice/insight/help but don't expect a magic formula.
