Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Gr 8-10-Chanti Evans is on a case again in this delightful teen detective novel. The urban setting and multicultural cast of characters will appeal to a wide audience, as will the mix of mystery, danger, friendship, romance, and family drama. Daughter of an undercover vice cop, the 15-year-old has a way of finding trouble in her rough Denver neighborhood-this time when her next-door neighbor MJ's house catches fire and Chanti spots a suspicious young man in a hoodie. She's determined to help MJ, a former gang member, especially after MJ is arrested for possession of drugs and weapons. Meanwhile, Chanti-a scholarship student at a snooty private school-must deal with her overprotective mother and the truth about the father she's never met. On top of all this, she's still not over her ex. Luckily, Chanti is resourceful, working her neighborhood contacts, her mother's access to law-enforcement information, and her own street smarts to figure out what's really going on. The middle of the story is slow at times, but when Chanti decodes a set of clues in the form of DVD covers, the pace speeds up and suddenly her life is in danger. This is a suspenseful story with a clever, funny teen at its center and just enough grit to make it realistic. While this book could stand alone, readers may want to start at the beginning of the series. A tantalizing cliff-hanger of an ending hints at the next installment.-Miranda Doyle, Lake Oswego School District, ORα(c) Copyright 2011. Review

VOYA
"The Langdon Prep novels take a unique turn from the typical prep-school serial novel. Chanti is smart, self-reliant, and no one's fool.  She balances friends, informants, homework, and her own curiosity with ease, taking on way more responsibility than the average teen detective.  Her narrative voice and instincts are equally sharp and deserving of praise.  It is not too late to invest in the series, and judging by the ending of this book, there are more adventures for Chanti to come." --Allison Hunter Hill, VOYA Magazine

Kirkus Reviews
Chanti Evans is back in another episode of street-smart crime-solving in the Langdon Prep series.  Despite her promises to her vice-cop mother, Lana, and the damage her investigations have done to her relationship with would-be love Marco, she gets deeply involved in her friend MJ's troubles with her old gang. Reid continues the snappy dialogue and clever storytelling of the previous volumes...and there are times when Chanti's insight is laugh-out-loud humorous. A cliffhanger ending will have readers clamoring for more. (Mystery. 12 & up)

More About the Author

I grew up in Atlanta, Georgia where I lived some of the same experiences Chanti Evans does in the Langdon Prep series: I attended a prep school where I didn't fit in, my mom was a police detective, and I always wanted to help her solve crimes. Like Chanti, I have lived most of my life around law enforcement types, including my husband, so I have no fear of running out of story ideas.

But that's about where the similarities end. I'm not fearless enough to be a detective, although I did give my two cents on some of my mother's cases whether she asked or not (she almost never did). Luckily, writing fiction gives me the chance to play a detective on paper and do one of my favorite things in the universe - tell stories.

This novel is a gem, and I can hardly wait for the 4th book.

There were things she didn't catch on to until someone else pointed them out which gave the story a little more realism.

I cannot wait to see what happens next, and if Chanti will follow Lana's rules and stay out of trouble.

The third book in the Langdon Prep series did not disappoint. Chanti is 3 months into her first year at Langdon Prep, and her sleuthing/curiousity/nosiness leads into into trouble once again. When Chanti witnesses a fire at the home of her ex-juvenile offender best friend's house, it sets of a series of suspenseful events that will not be solved until the novel's end. Is Chanti's friend MJ involved with the crimes that occur in the neighborhood? Will MJ be sent to prison--or worse? Will Chanti live long enough to solve another mystery? Will she make to her 16th birthday?

Adding to this drama is Chanti's home life. She learns a little bit about her father, but not enough to satisfy her--or me. It will take another installment in the series to find out more about who Chanti's father was and is. I can't wait.

The highlights of this novel are the voice of the narrator and the development of the the conflict and relationships. Chanti is intelligent, funny, a bit of a smart-alek, and always a loyal friend. She seems like a real person I'd want to hang out with if I were 16.

I love that Marco is still hot for Chanti, and the feeling is mutual. I like that her friendship with MJ plays a large part in the novel. As well as Chanti's relationship with Lana.

This novel is a gem, and I can hardly wait for the 4th book.

I'm in my early 30s and haven't read, or recommended, teen fiction in over 10 years. This series of detective books by Kimberly Reid is great. I read the first book for free, finished it and downloaded the second. I immediately pre-ordered the third and have stayed on a treadmill and in the gym locker room to read Sweet 16 to Life, yes,the booms are so good I had to read it as soon as I saw it delivered on my Kindle. The adventures of Chanti, MJ, and Marco make for some fun reading. I cannot wait to see what happens next, and if Chanti will follow Lana's rules and stay out of trouble.

Sweet 16 to Life
Kimberly Reid
Kensington K-Teen/Dafina, Jan 29 2013, $9.95
ISBN: 9780758267429

After solving several crimes at her school Langdon Prep (see Creeping with the Enemy and My Own Worst Frenemy), teenager Chanti Evans' ex quasi boyfriend Marci Ruiz and her mom undercover vice cop Lana demand she stop her investigations though she has saved lives. The relationship between Chanti and Lana is further strained because the teen's absentee father wants back in the lives of mother and daughter just before her sixteenth birthday.

In her Denver Heights family house, Chanti follows the smell of smoke until she sees a fire two houses over. She calls 911 while grabbing a fire extinguisher as the home of her friend MJ and Big Mama is on fire; no one is inside. Chanti knows the fire was deliberate and probably aimed at MJ by her former gangbanger pals. Unable to ignore the arson, Chanti enlists Marco as she tries to help MJ deal with an angry gang member Lux. However the situation turns nastier when Lux vanishes. The cops and the gang suspect the worst from Chanti and MJ.

The latest Langdon Prep young teen street noir is a super suspense with an extremely complex investigation as the intriguing case is far from linear (young readers and us geriatric boomers will need deep concentration). The support cast is solid and the heroine displays depth as leads the inquiry. Readers will enjoy Sweet 16 to Life.

Chanti Evans has saved lives as well as exposed lies and secrets at her private school
and as well as in her neighborhood. She has been successful in taking down her Langdon
Prepsters but does she have what it takes to go up against real hardcore criminals? Though
she has proven to have all the skills needed to save the day, skills she learned from her
mom who is an undercover-cop, will this 15 almost 16 year old be able to solve a serious
case without getting herself in harms way?

This was my first time reading a novel by Kimberly Reid. I am grateful I was allowed to
read an advance copy of Sweet 16 to Life. I wish I would have been able to catch up in the
rest of the series in the book, but for the most part I was able to piece everything together.
I would suggest if reading this maybe reading the two books ahead of this one, but in a
way it could be read as a stand alone as well. Chanti is the modern day, urban Nancy Drew
she proves that girls can do anything and nothing too big or too small will get in her way.
Chanti has such an alliance to protect her friends so when her friend MJ comes to her for
help she doesn't think twice to give her a hand. She goes up against scary gang members
and ex-cons in order to clear her friends name. Chanti is not only trying to uncover a case
but she is also dealing with family issues, that effect a lot of teens growing up.

I enjoyed the story, again I wish I would have read the other parts, but Ms. Chanti she is
a great little detective and she gets the job done never leaving any stone unturned. She
makes she not only gets her clues and pieces them together but she also makes sure she
gets the small details the average person may not have seen.
