Book Description

When fate conspires against you and gives you three loves to choose from, what do you do? What if you make the wrong choice?

Shara is a Healer, raised and trained from childhood until her unique gift manifests itself. When she gains the rank Journeyman she is hired to serve as the court healer for the barbaric kingdom of Glendor.

Untrained for war, she is thrust unmercifully into its bloody arms when the kingdom is invaded. Ordered by her king to the front lines to tend the wounded, she is forced to flee when their camp is attacked. Happening upon a wounded soldier in the forest, every mile back to the capital is a struggle, and breaking the Healer's code, she falls in love with her charge.

If Shara thought that to be the least of her troubles, the appearance of a fierce warrior captain who appoints himself her protector, teaches her differently. Trouble comes in threes at the appearance of a former love and fellow healer. Faced with decisions of the heart and the sudden manifestation of her gift, there is little room for anything else to go wrong. Or at least that's what Shara thought.

5.0 out of 5 stars Stunning New Voice in Romantic Fantasy August 31, 2011
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
Shara is a journeyman healer from a neighboring country sent to the front lines by King Darren of Glendor to assist his army in the fight against northern barbarians. Separated from the retreating forces in a surprise skirmish, she stumbles upon a badly wounded soldier in the woods. Against her more professional instincts, Shara comes to fall in love with her dreamy, blue-eyed companion as they slowly make their way back to the capitol. The story goes on to reveal his true identity and their struggle to overcome class barriers in the face of opposition to their burgeoning love. Between her struggles for acceptance at court, the re-emergence of past lovers, and the ongoing battle against invading forces, Wylie weaves an enticing and uniquely original novel - full of plot twists and wistful courtships. Highly recommended!

4.0 out of 5 stars Divided love and loyalties in a complex world August 2, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition
Shara is a trainee healer, sent to work at the battle-front in Jen Wylie's intriguing fantasy novel, Sweet Light. The fantasy world is nicely drawn, with details revealing themselves convincingly through circumstance and dialog. There's plenty of depth and scope--a world of healers, its political interactions with other peoples around it, kings and politicians, soldiers and spies, plus a touch of magic. Shara's battle's not going the way her leaders hoped, and soon she's running away through the forest, where she comes upon a wounded, and oddly silent soldier. With nothing but the medicines in her pouch and the herbs of the forest to help her, she determines to help, and so begins a beautiful relationship that carries through the book.

The concept of soul-ties is nicely developed as Shara falls in love. The absence of her previous lover leaves her angry, but what might his return bring to her? The impossibility of her present relationship brings pain, but what are the alternatives? Pulled three ways, aided and abetted by the friend who pleads her cause, she seems to find resolution only to have it quickly snatched away.

The novel reads like two parts in a longer series and I found myself wishing by the end that there was more. So many unanswered questions remain, and the world is too big to be left without exploring them. There's a feeling of incompleteness, even though the story's told. Perhaps that's a compliment to the author's imagination, that her characters remain with the reader. An enjoyable romantic fantasy crying out for a sequel, Sweet Light is a complex look at the human heart, prejudice, loyalty and love.

Disclosure: The author gave me a free ecopy of this novel in exchange for an honest review.

4.0 out of 5 stars Sweet Light is for men. July 30, 2011
Format:Paperback
Shara is a healer. She falls in love with a soldier who turns out to be the king's son. The very same king that hired her to do a job for his army. Forbidden love is powerful and it overcomes a major hurdle in this story. But then, that's the beauty of this book. There's a whole lot more to 'Sweet Light' than just that.

Jennifer Wylie crafted and defined men exceeding well in this book. Three of them are after Shara's heart and neither is less than a worthy man. Jen didn't excoriate these characters, though they each have flaws. To read a story of love and the challenges love faces, and then to enjoy it; as an alpha male, this book pleased me to no end.

First, the story is unlike any other. Shara the healer does her job exceedingly well. Even as she's broken, beaten, downtrodden, and cast aside at times, Shara is powerful. And not aggressively so. Shara is a pleasant character who sets up the roles of the others so well, bringing a light to the whole story that doesn't seem to exist in other books.

You'll find love, magic, fantasy, and a whole lot of wow in this book. Then comes the plot twist. One so profound and unforeseen, it takes the story to another level entirely. Without dropping a spoiler here, Shara is more than meets the eye and you'll need an e-reader to flip the pages faster.

A.T. Russell, Author.
