Book Description

January 1, 1999
Fiction. Asian American Studies. This is the fictional debut from an author whose short stories have appeared in several countries, including Canada, the United States, England, and China. The stories in SWEET LIKE SALTWATER span the globe as well, from rural colonial Guyana to Canadian backroads to the banks of the Hudson. Rendered with wry humor and acuity, Deonandan's stories reflect the context of imperialism that he speaks to in his poignant introduction: And for we displaced Indian children of the Caribbean, as distant from our birth as that realm may seem, the taste of our blood's history is as sweet as the saltwater of that warm sea.

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful, gentle stories, December 14, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Sweet Like Saltwater (Paperback)
I loved this evocative collection of stories. It brought me right back to the atmosphere, sounds and pace I remember from exotic travels. The author uses language to make more than a statement; he makes a world, a meaning and a memory. This is a wonderful, warm read for winter.
