From the Publisher

"You know, we're going to get this done."

Lou Piniella to WGN's Steve Cochran on his goal of leading the Chicago Cubs to a world championship

From the Inside Flap

Baseball is in Lou Piniella's blood. The son of athletic Spanish immigrants, Piniella's boyhood in Tampa, Florida, was an education in the finer points of the great American game. Those early experiences shaped the person and athlete he became and led him to the pinnacle of the sport, including the Rookie of the Year Award, two Manager of the Year Awards, and three World Series rings.

Sweet Lou brings the story of one of baseball's most intriguing managers to life, relives history with the players who created it, and explores the heartbreaks, successes, and colorful cast of people that have forged Piniella into the gifted competitor he is today. Stories of Billy Martin, Reggie Jackson, George Steinbrenner, Marge Schott, Rob Dibble, Alex Rodriguez, Ben Grieve, Kosuke Fukudome, and many more underscore Piniella's true passion for the sport.

As a yankee fan who grew up in brooklyn, I was very curious to read about Lou Piniella, an old time yankee from the 1970's and 1980's. What I got was an inspiring portrait of a very passionate baseball lifer. It was nice to see someone so passionate about the game of baseball, winning, and inspiring others to be the best that they can be.
This book was broken up by different phases of his career, mainly his stops on different teams. I was able to get a great picture of who he was and how seriously he treated his job. There is no wonder why he was successful wherever he went.
My only complaint was that certain parts were drawn out as I feel they could have been condensed into shorter chapters.

I highly recommend this book to any baseball fans who enjoy a good biographical portrait. Sweet Lou is definitely one that deserves our attention and acknowledgment.

I have been a Cubs fan since moving to Chicago in 1999 and have been a fan of Lou since he became skipper. So, I was very anxious to read the book and find out more about him, his history as a player, his time with the Yankees organization and his time with the Cubs. I can't tell you how enjoyable the book is, it has taught me many things about Lou that I never knew and makes me appreciate having him here in Chicago all that much more. It helps to know where he came from to understand how he coaches. I loved the comment about "Lou's, Lou" from some of the authors interviews and especially enjoyed hearing the details about the Zambrono-Barrett scuffle. The photos are a great touch.

I REALLY ENJOYED THIS BOOK. AUTHOR MELISSA ISSACSON DOES A GREAT JOB WITH THE LIFE AND CAREER OF LOU. I REMEMBER HIM IN THE INDIANS ORGANIZATION FOR A BRIEF TIME BEFORE HE HIT IT BIG WITH THE ROYALS AND THEN THE YANKEES. FROM THERE LOU BECAME A SUCCESSFUL MANAGER FOR SEVERAL TEAMS. LOU WILL ALWAYS BEEN KNOWN FOR HIS PASSION AND DESIRE FOR BASEBALL. HE WAS A HUSTLING OVER ACHIEVER WHO WORKED HARD ON HIS SKILLS. HE EXPECTED THE SAME FROM HIS TEAMMATES AND PLAYERS HE MANAGED. LOU HAS QUITE A TEMPER BUT ALSO A BIG HEART. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS BOOK FOR ALL BASEBALL FANS.

This straightforward, very readable biography looks at the career of one of baseball's most passionate players and managers. Lou Piniella was never quite a star, but his passion and intense play made him a fan favorite. We read about it here, including his taking bats to water coolers when things didn't go right. Then it was on to managing in Cincinnati (winning the upset 1990 World Series), Seattle, Tampa Bay, and the Cubs. Piniella has a temper, but he also has a passion for the game that he likes to see in his coaches and players. I felt the author focused a bit too much on one year but overall painted a picture of a man that clearly loves the game and belongs in it.

I really do like this book. As a Mariner Fanatic, I am a fan of Lou Piniella. This book really shows not only his funny side, but his passion for the game of baseball, and the men who play the game; the way it was meant to be played.
