Book Description

April 1995
In 1987, Drex Brooks began photographing sites that had been important in the history of white/Native American relations, places such as treaty sites and battlefields. This body of work is named Sweet Medicine after a Cheyenne cultural hero who taught his people their rituals and ceremonies and who also foresaw the changes and destruction that the white man would bring. The photographs encompass not only places of death but also places of renewal, places that retain their sacred importance today, even though, in many cases, little is there to inform others of what occurred.

The meaning of what happened in these places, from Massachusetts to the state of Washington, from Minnesota to Mississippi, is difficult to fathom and accept, as Patricia Limerick notes in her provocative essay. The Indian wars are a topic most prefer to know only superficially, or to ignore altogether, but she maintains that an understanding of their complexity as well as their violence is critical to an understanding of this nation's history.

This book is for anyone interested in the history of the native peoples in this country and in the events from 1620 to 1890 that so profoundly altered—but didn't quite destroy—their lives.

Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

The American public that is drawn to our Indian wars will appreciate photographer Brooks's efforts to locate and photograph the sites of Indian-white encounters. Arranged chronologically by event, the "story" begins with Plymouth Rock (1620) and ends with a little-known 1898 Minnesota skirmish. While the photographs are usually benign (the Minnesota site is a straw-strewn field), their accompanying captions provide excruciating details of the horrors committed at these places. Fortunately, an intriguing essay by historian Limerick challenges the reader to look beyond the elements of battle, to appreciate the very human concerns of combatants on both sides, and to view both Indians and whites as full participants in our nation's history. 4.0 out of 5 stars Stunning Photographs, January 5, 2001
This review is from: Sweet Medicine: Sites of Indian Massacres, Battlefields, and Treaties (Hardcover)
I recently bought this book for myself on-line. I had not seen the book in real life but I was not disappointed. The photographs are stunning. They are all black and white and bring an erie reality to how I pictured a lot of the places shown. I have been reading a lot of Native American history and it is nice to have photos of a lot of the places I have read about. The narratives are well written, although a little general in nature. Overall - a good coffee-table type book.
