Book Description

February 1, 2003
The average person eats one-half cup of sugar a day, more than is recommended for the average person, particularly people who suffer from diabetes, insulin resistance, and Syndrome X. Unlike sugar, xylitol does not require insulin to be metabolized. Xylitol is an all-natural sugar substitute derived from birch tree bark or from corncobs. It is teaspoon-for-teaspoon as sweet as sugar, and has the added quality of binding to saliva, leaving a sweet taste lingering in the mouth. Fran Gare explains the health benefits of using xylitol rather than sugar, aspartame, saccharin, sobitol, or mannitol.

5.0 out of 5 stars Really sweet, September 3, 2008

This review is from: The Sweet Miracle of Xylitol: The All-Natural Sugar Substitute Approved by the FDA As a Food Additive (Paperback)
The book is basic information about xylitol and its history. The product itself has turned out to be very useful...it really does keep me from getting sore throats, etc.

The only problem with the book is that it does not mention that xylitol is poisonous to dogs...pet owners need to know that before using xylitol themselves.

1.0 out of 5 stars danger, July 15, 2011
This review is from: The Sweet Miracle of Xylitol: The All-Natural Sugar Substitute Approved by the FDA As a Food Additive (Paperback)
I was very excited about both xylitol and this book. I was disappointed, when the book arrived, to find it so slim and basic. I tried to find as many ways to use xylitol as possible, although this was a little difficult since I don't have a sweet tooth and don't really use much sugar.

However, I was shocked to develop heart flutters. As I was taking many different nutritional supplements at the time (I am always experimenting), I discontinued one or two every few days, but without ending the heart flutters, which I found frightening.

Finally, I realized the only newish thing I was still taking was xylitol. The heart flutters ended for good just one day after I stopped using xylitol. As a friend pointed out, perhaps I should have been wary of anything recommended by the FDA, which is just another arm of the corporate kleptocracy.

That's just me, of course. I hope others will write about their xylitol use as well as their views of this book.

In the meantime, D-Ribose and D-Mannose seem to be truly healthy sugars: I am happy to report early signs of success in terms of general health and energy. D-Ribose provides energy and D-Mannose is anti-fungal (both major benefits to health generally since there is usually both low energy and fungal overgrowth with all poor health). For D-Ribose, read "The Sinatra Solution" (although it is not an easy book: I read it twice and still did not feel I had understood it thoroughly). I haven't found a layman's book on D-Mannose yet. Creatine is worth considering too; the best book is probably the research-based but expensive and jargon-ridden "Essentials of Creatine in Sports and Health" by Stout, Antonio and Kalman.

This is a good overview of the benefits of Xylitol, which are many. Worth checking out. Healthier sweetening alternative.
