a revelation,

This is an album of hymns, and it's so full of feeling that it really ought to move the listener whether he's religious or not. The cd presents one part of the New Orleans jazz tradition which is not often seen as a main point, but it's still important. The soulful vocals of Narvin Kimball and Harold "Duke" Dejan are really incredible, and the band has everything under total control. Bet you never thought hymns could be this cool...

The Preservation Hall Jazz Band is a venerable institution and it's always a treat to hear one of its recordings. This CD is all hymns and spirituals as a tribute to the religious roots of much of New Orleans jazz. From the mellow piano and clarinet duet of "God Will Take Care of You" to the swinging version of "Jesus on the Main Line", this is an enjoyable hour of jazz. The vocals are not as pleasing as on some of the other Preservation Hall CD's with the notable exception of Wendell Brunious on "Do Lord" and Duke Dejan on "Jesus on the Main Line".

How Sweet It Is,

This review is from: In the Sweet Bye and Bye (Audio CD)
I have long been a fan of the Preservation Hall Jazz Band and New Orleans music in general. This album expemlifies both the strong musical tradition of dixieland along with the infusion of religious music, so critical in the development of the New Orleans style of play.I recommend this to anyone who is a listner of dixieland, New Orleans, or gospel music. Get ready to have a ball.
