Amazing Grace,

Aby Wolf's debut CD is simply amazing. Her songwriting, singing, playing, arranging, and production are both astonishingly mature and unjadedly fresh. On the songs where she just sings and plays guitar, she sounds like an angel (think perhaps of a Minnesotan Dolly Parton), and on her more complex arrangements, she sounds like a small symphony (think of a pared-down Duke Ellington with Billie singing). At times you can hear the influences of her favorite musicians (especially Bjork, Ani DiFranco, and Yma Sumac), but she combines these echoes into a mix that's utterly original and that lives far free of anyone else's shadow. This CD is not just auspicious; it's a fully realized arrival.
