Editorial Reviews

One of the most important films of the '50s, Sweet Smell Of Success boasts two soundtracks: the first was one of the great Jazz scores written and performed by the Chico Hamilton Quintet; the other, a furious orchestral score by the masterful Elmer Bernstein. These albums were released separately in 1957 but are combined here on a single CD in digital format for the first time. Sweet Smell Of Success is memorable for the vicious performances of Burt Lancaster and Tony Curtis and its uniquely nasty view of the tough underbelly of New York fifty years ago. El. 2008.

5.0 out of 5 stars JAZZ FILM SCORING AT IT'S FINEST................ February 4, 2011
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
This is one of the finest jazz film scores to emerge from the 50's. It features the great Elmer Bernstein composing and conducting the orchestral score and the great Cico Hamilton Quintet performing the jazz quintet portion. Berstein composed some of the finest jazz scores available and this one ranks up there with his very best. The Chico Hamilton Quintet grooves with the jazz score and takes it to another level. One thing that made The Chico Hamilton Quintet so unique with their sound was the addition of Fred Katz on cello. Katz was one of the few cello players around in the day playing jazz and perhaps the best. This give this music for the quintet another dimension and a multitude of jazz harmonics and tonalities. Chico Hamilton does one of his best recorded drum solos here utilizing the brushes, at least I think so and I'm a drummer. This film captures a dark side of the big apple, but it's reality. The liner notes describe the difficulties involved with the makeing of this film, and there were plenty. Both the Bernstein and Hamilton scores are remarkable in taking the already cult status like film to a whole new level. Katz did a lot of the composing work within the quintet and he is a remarkable jazz composer and cellist. Both the orchestral and quintet score covers the complete gamut for jazz charting and if you like great jazz film scores this is a must for your collection. Not enough can be said for the creativity and inovations made by the composers, musicians and producers involved with this project. I have found this to be a repeat play for me over and over again. This is the complete package from composing, the instumentals and musicians involved, the production and very informative liner notes included. Brilliant piece of work. I highly recommend it and give it a very strong 5 stars. Check out my other reviews.

5.0 out of 5 stars Satori on CD April 19, 2008
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
I don't believe there has ever been an album in any format offering both the orchestral score and the Chico Hamilton sides from this brilliant music. Took half a century, but it's well worth the wait.

A marvelous set.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sweet Smells September 22, 2008
Format:Audio CD
One of Elmer's Bernstein's brilliant 50's jazz scores finally comes to cd along with Chico Hamilton's Jazz Quartet session pieces from the same movie. A rare treat to have these 2 albums together on 1 cd for the 1st time. The sound is very good considering the sources and the memories culled from the brutally straightforward film make one want to see it again. Great stuff all 'round.

3.0 out of 5 stars two soundtracks, one film August 27, 2008
Format:Audio CD
For the first time the Chico Hamilton and the Elmer Bernstein soundtrack for this classic movie on one album. Especially the latter one is essential in the movie, because it underscores the fast paced en frenetic tempo of a city that never sleeps. For those people who collect soundtracks and never could lay their hands on the vinyl this cd is a must have. Furthermore: the sound is superb. Very nice.
