3.0 out of 5 stars alternative Christian music
Sarah Reeves has a high, clear tone for a voice. She puts it against music that is best described as "Christian Alternative" in that is isn't rock, nor is it new age, or country. It's sort of in between all three. Not fast paced for the most part, it glides along smoothly, with the occasional hard rock electric guitar for a few parts of songs.

4.0 out of 5 stars Nice... but only seven tracks? (details), January 21, 2010
This review is from: Sweet Sweet Sound (Audio CD)
Getting directly to the details of the music, this CD is subtitled, "Sweet Sweet Sound" (which is derived from the Track Four song.) Well, the lead vocals (Sarah Reeves) are indeed markedly sweet but the overall ambiance somewhat becomes a minor competition with the raspy rhythm guitar which is no doubt accentuated with a little fuzz-tone. Further, on instrumentation, the music lacks anything that really manifests any noteworthy lead guitar work anywhere on the album. This musical deficit is not inherently adverse but voids like this can eventually generate some tedium for listeners.

Reeves' overall performance radiates the commercial rock sound which prevailed throughout the 1980s rock genre but this is hardly unexpected. The general characteristics of so-called Christian rock tend to run several years behind its more innovative progenitor. I do not present this element as being in any way negative - I mention it more to demonstrate that the chord progressions which characterize Reeves' music are pretty elemental and that these ideas have been around for a good long time; therefore, low marks for originality but high ones in terms of listener palatability (popular sound.)

The harmonies (all female) are artfully meshed and here Reeves dwells on safe ground by cleverly exploiting plenty of suspended notes and Major 9th vocal blends. I specifically recall when this technique became re-popularized some years ago, (Classical composers have used it for generations), most especially by progressive bluegrass musicians - the end product is an upbeat, robust, and inspiring-type song.

Reeves' youthfulness is readily perceptible as a consequence of her voice timbre and the character of her singing is somewhat whispery. While her volume has not fully matured I fully anticipate that this mannerism of her singing depth will mature if she continues in the music business.

The Christian message here is well-defined through Reeves lyrics, an area of poetic concern of which many Christian Rock artists seem to lose track. Her song clarity could have been slightly improved had the guitarist(s) backed off just a bit.

My final point is likely one that many prospective fans are asking: Only seven cuts? I recall from my many pleasant years of listening to record albums, 8-track tapes, cassettes, and CDs that the unwritten industry standard for the minimum number of songs on an album was ten. Jerry Garcia of The Grateful Dead was notorious for only just meeting his scanty obligation of ten songs on most of his albums, many of these songs having been hastily written right in the studio so that an album could be adequately produced. So I was surprised that Reeves gives us only a paltry seven tracks. Oh well, times change and perhaps it's me who has become the anachronism.

In summary, this CD will make for delightful road music within the cadre of Christian rock enthusiasts. I think more than an hour of listening might become redundant and thus heighten one's desire for at least an occasional impressive lead guitar riff here and there... but it is what it is.

Recommended, noting the caveats as listed.

I could listen to this CD all day long. It's one of the best inspirational sounds I've listened to in a long time. You can tell the music comes from the artists soul.

Sarah Reeves has produced a good pop album with an inspirational message of faith and devotion. Unfortunately, while it's all "good," I cannot say that any of it is "great."

The music is formulaic, with the standard two-verses-and-a-chorus, standard guitar riffs, and standard rising emotions. There's nothing new here to really help her stand out from the crowd.

As for the writing, she takes no real chances. These are standard songs of being faithful and loving God. Those are good messages, but there's no depth of meaning or understanding or emotion underlying those messages.

Overall, you could do far worse than this album. The music is good (if fairly generic) and the message is inspirational (although fairly shallow). She succeeds at producing good music, but she fails at producing anything truly unique.

I am an avid Christian music fan. I like all genres from southern gospel to contemporary to hard rock, so when this album became available I thought I would give it a spin. I have never heard of Sarah Reeves and I have to say that it would NOT shock me in the least if she becomes the next household name in Christian music. This album is outstanding. She sings with so much conviction and seeing how she co-wrote all of the songs on the CD, she also writes with as much conviction. If you enjoy the music of Natalie Grant or Nicole Nordeman then you will most definitely appreciate this young lady's music. I highly recommend this CD as the music has substance and truly makes one feel close to the Lord.

5.0 out of 5 stars Incredible Worship!, June 8, 2009

Customer review from the Amazon Vine™ Program (What's this?)
Sarah Reeves has a gift...to reach into the depths of your soul and move your spirit to a place of worship. Her voice is fresh, captivating, and incredibly beautiful. I think most would agree that very seldom is an entire CD worth buying...but this one is truly worth it. Each and every song will draw you closer to God. If I had to pick two of my favorite songs on the CD, I'd say they are "Sweet Sweet Sound" and "My Savior." But truly, it is hard to even name those as my favorites. This is a CD you can listen to over and over...and I did. Don't hesitate in buying this newly released CD from Sarah, it is just what your spirit needs.

4.0 out of 5 stars Very Enjoyable, July 27, 2009

Customer review from the Amazon Vine™ Program (What's this?)
Wow...a nice surprise. I'm not generally a big fan of Christian Rock, but the beat and lyrics on Sweet Sweet Sound were really good. I enjoyed listening and most especially to Fresh Annoiting and Awaken. Sarah's vocals reminded me of Allison Krause, Jewel, and Enya all wrapped in one. For fans of Christian Rock, this is a must have album. The lyrics and message mesh together nicely and upbeat tenor of the music makes it enjoyable for those not looking for any deeper message beyond a great song.

This is definitely an artist that I will want to hear more of in the future.
