THE SWEET AND SOUR TONGUE journeys from sadness to joy, along the way paying tribute to the solemn ghosts who inhabit the past and whose wisdom and love help us to live. From the healing power of remembrance in "Clinging to a Thread", to the ultimate self-sacrificing Jewish mother in the science fiction parody, "You Are Who You Eat" and the corrupting power of the evil inclination in "Smelling of Earth, Dreaming of Sky", these tales provide inspiration, thoughtful reflection...and not a few smiles.
Rooted in Kaballah and steeped in religion, superstitions, and customs, these stories are thoughtful--and sometimes hilarious--examinations of traditional and nontraditional takes on Jewish life.
Leslie What examines friendships, family, and faith and brings a fresh perspective to one group's ability to laugh in the face of unspeakable horror, sometimes having this as their only weapon of survival.

A wild and wonderful collection. I love this book. The stories are somehow warm and wacky at the same time. The title story alone is worth the price. You'll be amazed. This is a great introduction to the work of Leslie What.

This review is from: The Sweet and Sour Tongue (Paperback)
Leslie What's short stories celebrate the richly funny aspects of the most awful day of your life. Her particular genius is to observe the nuances of human interaction, to feel intensely the way people hurt one another physically and emotionally, and to write about it in a way that reveals that comedy is intrinsic in tragedy. This is what humor is for: to transform the pain of living into an understanding of life's complexities. This is her first collection, but she has had many stories published in literary, fantasy, and science-fiction magazines. Let's have more Leslie What collections! And I want to see novels from this woman!
