5.0 out of 5 stars Finesse Through a Broad Spectrum of Songs: Sweet!, July 26, 2011

This review is from: Sweet Spot (Audio CD)
Mark Winkler has been pleasing music lovers for years but somehow he just gets better. This new release - SWEET SPOT - finds him completely at ease and at home with his own music as well as the music of others (Bobby Troup, for instance). Every track on this 12 track CD is as fresh as a needed breeze in summer, from the glib, snappy songs (like 'Like Young' and 'Catch Me If You Can') to the ballads such as 'This Side of Loving', 'Jazz is a Special Taste' (from his West Coast hit musical PLAY IT COOL due to open Off Broadway this fall) and the absolutely perfect 'Their Hearts Were Full Of Spring'. And it goes without saying that Winkler pulls out all stops for the title song 'Sweet Spot' in which he shares the spotlight with fellow singer Barbara Morrison. Ballads, jazz, Latin laden tunes - Mark Winkler is completely at home in all of them.

And of course a lot of the success of a disc as full of goodies as this one is dependent on the surrounding accompaniment, and it is here that Winkler also shines as a man of taste with a fine ear for good talent: Eli Brueggemann, piano and organ, Tim Emmons and Robert Hurst, bass, Steve Barnes, Greg Hutchinson and Luis Conte, drums and percussion, Bob Sheppard and Kim Richmond, sax, Grant Geissman and Anthony Wilson, guitar, Billy Childs, piano, and Nolan Shaheed, trumpet. It is a first class ensemble, intricately aware of each others gifts and star turns, and creating a sound that enhances the well defined and expressive baritone voice of Mark Winkler. It's a sweet thing! Grady Harp, July 11

4.0 out of 5 stars One of his best ever, October 21, 2011
This review is from: Sweet Spot (Audio CD)
I just caught Mark live yesterday,at TheMerc in Temecula California where he performed some of these tunes. He's like good wine that gets much better with age. I especially love his original , somewhere in Brazil. It speaks volumes about rude audiences and the plight of the singer working gigs in joints.

5.0 out of 5 stars Do yourself a favor..., August 18, 2011
This review is from: Sweet Spot (Audio CD)
...and BUY THIS ALBUM! I admit I've long been a fan of Mark Winkler -- but this latest release is the best yet. He swings, he sways, he charms. Standards and original numbers both make this album a joy from start to finish. I can't stop playing "Somewhere in Brazil," which is surely destined to be one of the most performed cabaret songs in cabaret history. Check out "Catch Me If You Can" and "Like Young" and "But Not for Me." Perfection. And what a group he's assembled to back up his vocals. When I think of Mark, I think "taste." And Sweet Spot is tasty with a capital T. You won't be disappointed.

I loved this record! Sweet Spot is the perfect title for this album of stand out tracks. Mark Winkler continues to be a vibrant and refreshing vocalist in the contemparary jazz field. Sweet Spot is that rare album with a flawless combination of style and class, one of great melodies and stand out arrangements. From the whimsical title track duet with guest vocalist Barbara Morrison, to a clever "Catch Me If You Can", the sublime "Jazz Is A Special Taste" and album stand out "Somewhere in Brazil", Sweet Spot is a jazz album that pops, a great album that is the perfect blend of subtle jazz and pop flash. 5 stars!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars It's Martini Time :), July 29, 2011
This review is from: Sweet Spot (Audio CD)
OK, I don't even drink martinis, but this new collection by one of my fave male jazz vocalists makes me want to grab the martini shaker, pour a few for friends and chill in the backyard. Wow. So smooth, happy and delightful. Yes, Mark has definitely hit the sweet spot with this one. Excuse me while I pour another :)
