Book Description

August 15, 2000
When Anthony "Ant" Poole, a young auto mechanic with a creative approach to the mating game, tries out his latest line on Sharron Francis, he has no idea of the impact it will have. For Sharron, an ordinary girl in search of companionship and happiness, Ant's words are filled with mystery and allure. Would she really be getting an actual piece of him, or just a piece period? The more Sharron contemplates Ant's line, the more it confounds her. When she decides the only way for her to discover its meaning is to discover Ant for herself, both her life and his are turned upside down.

A seductive, insightful look at the age-old question: How do people fall in love -- and stay in love?

Amazon.com Review

What happens when Anthony "Ant" Poole, a consummate player, meets the woman who makes fast, easy sex seem like a waste of time? In Sweet St. Louis, Omar Tyree explores the emotional differences between black men and women, and traces the rocky path to true love. 24-year-old Sharron Francis is looking for a man who'll talk with her, answer the hard questions, and stick around. She's on a mission, "not to play hard to get, but hard to forget," and she'll give that heartbreaker Ant just a few chances before she moves on. But Ant has so much to learn. At least he has a solid job as a mechanic, buoyant self-esteem, and enough experience with women to recognize that Sharron--good-looking, thoughtful, and down-to-earth--might be "the one." Ant's best friend, Tone, teases him into confessing how deep his feelings for Sharron run, while her roommate, Celena, a player in her own right, keeps warning her away from him, arguing that Ant can never change his ways. Through long conversations, the lovers challenge and provoke each other. Yet just as they feel ready to move in together, Ant calls her from jail, swearing he's innocent. Will Sharron abandon him? Can he blame her if she does? He knows she "had the heart of the old school, to love a man to her death. And the steel of the new school to ask him everything about their future together without flinching, to do away with the destructiveness of assumptions."

A journalist and lecturer, Tyree sometimes generalizes too much about the sexes. He also relies on overly long, relaxed dialogue that can sometimes read like the transcript of an excruciating blind date. But Ant and Sharron are depicted as ordinary, multi-dimensional people who are full of contradictions. They try to balance hope with experience, and eventually they find the courage to grow together. --Regina Marler --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

From Publishers Weekly

"Hey, miss?... You wanna make a trade with me?... A piece of me for a piece of you." Anthony "Ant" Poole, a young African-American auto mechanic, believes he has a flair for pick-up lines in this overblown but lively romance by Tyree (Fly Girl). Against the hectic contemporary urban backdrop of St. Louis, Ant competes with his best friend, small-time criminal Anthony "Tone" Wallace, for dates. His days as a carefree Romeo are numbered, however, when he meets old-fashioned girl Sharron Francis, an airline caterer, who is trying to end an affair with a married man. Even Celena, Sharron's man-eating best friend, is jealous of Sharron's budding romance. Though Tyree relies on stereotypes and his prose is studded with distracting italics, his charting of his characters' inner motives is on target when he gets past surface description. The novel works best when the characters are one-on-one, deep in the lengthy conversations that fuel the narrative. Much as Ant bemoans the difficulties of dating a "thinking woman," he soon finds himself turning into a thinking man. Or as he says to Sharron's father: "Your daughter made me express myself." Still, even after Sharron rejects an old flame in favor of her new love, the commitment-phobic Ant can't quite give up his hunt for new conquests. It is finally a chastisement from one of his victims and a sobering night in jail that cause him to see the error of his ways. Tyree's checkered but entertaining street romance is a raucous cautionary tale steeped in the impulsiveness, verve and arrogance of youth. (Oct.)

3.0 out of 5 stars Very Very Slow !, January 25, 2000
By
N. Henry (Long Island, NY) - See all my reviews
It usually takes me less than a week to read a book, however this book took me 3 weeks. I am a big fan of Omar Tyree but this book had me wondering if he had slipped. The story was just slow and boring, it took forever to get to the point or just to get juicy period. The relationship between Ant and Sharon did not seem realistic to me and both of their friends (Celena & Tone) were childish and extremely immature. I also thought that Sharon was extremely pessimistic and asked too many questions, she analyzed Ant and the relationship so much that it was annoying. For someone that young it's hard to believe that her attitude towards men and relationships were so negative. After reading Flyy Girl and A Do Right Man I expectedn the same for Single Mom and Sweet St Louis but again I was disappointed. Mr Tyree if you read this please take us back to the creativity of your first two novels. I am not giving up on you because you've proved that you are a good writer. Overall I would still recommend this book, but be prepared to be a little bit bored.

2.0 out of 5 stars I Winced With Just About Every Paragraph, May 4, 2000
By
Cydney Rax "rmn1994" (Houston, TX United States) - See all my reviews
This is the first time I've ever provided comments on an Omar Tyree product. I'm aware that it's much easier to write a review than it is to write a page-turning book, therefore let me first commend Mr. Tyree for all his efforts in pursuing his writing dreams. However, in reading the first couple hundred pages of Sweet St. Louis, I couldn't help but notice certain habits he has in regards to his writing style. For example, he is notorious for explaning things that the reader automatically knows. Mr. Tyree will write a sentence like "Well, when did she get pregnant?" she asked, for more information on the story." It is not necessary to explain the character's every thought or the reasoning behind what he or she says. Frequently writing in that method slows the story's pace, makes one tempted to reshelve the book, and those type of sentences rarely add anything worthwhile to the story. If Mr. Tyree and his editor would remove all those redundant sentences during the rewrite, his stories would read so much better. He has great storylines, wonderful titles, but the writing style currently used isn't getting better but stays stagnant with each release. I enjoy some of his sentences, but I am looking forward to the day that he understands what makes a story flow and begins to utilize that knowledge so that the reader will have a more enjoyable experience. Wishing him much literary success.

We read this in April for our bookclub. We feel you Omar; but, you're preaching to the choir. The characters could have been developed better. The storyline was good -- why did it take me so long to read this book? I cared nothing about the characters. I think a reviewer wrote below, that it's much easier to be critical of someone work, as opposed to writing it.

I think Omar is a talented writer -- he just hasn't reached is peak yet. I'm afraid the next book by him I will have to wait for the paperback version...
