Very good but not the best,

This review is from: Sweet Stay Awhile: Songs & Lute Pieces (Audio CD)
This is an intelligent and elegant rendition of some of Dowland's most popular songs. The voice is lucid, the phrasing appropriate. Yet, the impact is not anywhere near the singing of Paul Agnew in this repertory. Just trust me, listen to sound clips, go to the store and ask to listen to a few tracks - and see for yourself. Agnew (not Daniels, not Scholl, not Chance) is the man for English medieval songs.

Charles Daniels is in fine voice for the more popular and well-known songs here, but the more solemn works are rather heavy going. Thankfully, there are not many of the latter and for the most part this CD can be well recommended. The lute playing of David Miller is best described as sturdy and reliable.
