Book Description

A New Adult novel from Erin McCarthy, the USA Today bestselling author of True.

Jessica Sweet thought going away to college would finally make her free of her parents’ constant judgments and insistence she play chastity club role model for their church events, but if anything, the freedom has made her realize she can’t go home and be a hypocrite anymore. Tired of dodging their questions, she stays at school over the summer and lands in an unexpected crash pad: Riley Mann’s house.

Sarcastic, cocky, and full of opinions, Riley is also sexy personified with tattoos and biceps earned from working as a roofer all day.  Not the right guy for her even if Jessica was looking for a relationship, which she is definitely not.  But Jessica knows that Riley hides the burden of having to raise his younger brothers behind that grin and as she helps him get his house in order for a custody hearing, they begin to fall hard for each other, and she is forced to question what she’s hiding herself.

Jessica has never had a problem getting naked with a guy, but when it comes to showing Riley how she truly feels inside, her fear of rejection may just ruin the best thing—the best guy—to ever happen to her…

5.0 out of 5 stars This sequel is better than the first! October 15, 2013

Loved the 2nd book of Erin's New Adult Series. Erin does a wonderful job of making you feel as if you are really watching this relationship happen. You can feel Jessica's turmoil over the transition from dutiful daughter to following her own heart. Their relationship is real, gritty, and so true that it you can feel the emotions. Thank you again for a wonderful read Erin!

3.0 out of 5 stars LITERAL ADDICTION's Review of Sweet May 5, 2014

Well Sweet by name but maybe not by nature! Jessica Sweet is the daughter of a strict religious family with strong beliefs and moral standards. She really doesn't want to go home during summer break so concocts a story that she's helping the poor and building houses. So far so good but she's going to need somewhere to stay and her solution? Well step right up Riley! Riley is the brother of Tyler who happens to be an ex but Riley has got the house to himself for a week and although not always that friendly it's a godsend, isn't it?

Jessica has tried for so long to live up to her families expectations but sometimes a girl just has to be true to herself. Jessica's folks might want her to be a pure little girl but she's no angel! Jessica has needs pure or not. If she has an itch then she wants it scratched and she'd rather have sex with friends who she trusts then random strangers and if that means some think she's easy then so what? Riley may be the hottest guy on two legs but it's obvious he's not into her. Jessica starts seeing a whole new side to Riley and it's a lot deeper then she expected . He's a strong determined young man who is fighting to keep all his brothers together. Jessica has ideas that might help but first she has to get his trust but that means letting down her own barriers and that's not an easy ask for anyone Sweet or not!

This is the second story in the True Believers series and is clearly aimed at a New Adult audience. I was quite surprised at the lack of sex if honest, as Jessica is painted as maybe not the shyest woman around. Instead the author has given us an insight into just how complicated attitudes towards sex and relationships have become.

4.0 out of 5 stars Fun quick read without the OTT drama! October 21, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Finally a New Adult that seems like the characters are acting their age. This was a fun quick read.

I loved that both Jessica and Riley had their own issues, yet they weren't overwhelmed by them. It was amusing to watch their romance evolve alongside of Jessica's personal revelations.

Riley was a great hero. He said enough boneheaded things to balance the sweet to make him believable. The ending was a little eyebrow raising but I enjoyed the book so much I just brushed it off.

Hope we get to see more of them in the next book!

4.0 out of 5 stars Loved Riley and Jessica! October 15, 2013
By K. Bias
Format:Kindle Edition
We are back with the gang from True. Jessica needs to find a place to crash for a week before her new apartment is ready. She is refusing to go home to visit her strict Religious family for the Summer. So she is staying in Cincinnati but telling her family she is off doing missionary work. Her room mate Rory, her boyfriend Tyler and his younger brothers are off to visit with her family so Tyler offers for Jessica to stay at his place. The only problem is that his older brother Riley is also living there. And Jessica and Riley have kind of a love/hate relationship. They are two very sarcastic people that love getting a rise out of the other.

"Your sarcasm is annoying..."
"Why? Because it remind you of yourself?"
"That's entirely possible..."

But strangely enough they begin to enjoy each other's company. It first develops into a grudging friendship, then some secret feelings, and lust. She is there for him when he needs it. And he anchors her. But they are both somewhat awkward when it comes to relationships. It is easy to get hurt and hurt the other.

"So what do you think? The princess and the prick...It could work. Or at least we could give it a shot."

I adored Riley! He seemed so cocky and self absorbed at first, but he is actually caring, sweet, and a one woman man. He respected her and refused to let them be about casual sex. He is not smooth like his brother, but is genuine and sweet once you got to see his real personality. He is a little rough around the edges, protective, jealous, and could be quick tempered. He's from the wrong side of town and struggling financially, but he did his best to take care of those he cared about.

"I want to be important to you. Special...Do you know how stupid I feel saying that?

Sweet is kind of different than its predecessor, True, and a bit different from the general batch of NA titles out there today. That both worked for it and against it a bit. The con would be that the pacing was a bit slow and there wasn't much in the way of "revelations" and such with the two main characters, at least, in my opinion. As much as I enjoyed the progression of Riley and Jessica's relationship, the characters themselves had very little going for them. This was definitely more about Jessica, with a little problem revolving around Riley added in for "affect". The pro would be, if you're looking for something a bit different, despite the slow pace, you'll enjoy this nonetheless.

Jessica is a strong, capable girl who is trying to break free from the tight mold that her parents have created for her. It's a typical scenario where the protagonist is trying to find the courage a determination to stand up for herself and go after what she wants in life. I kind of wanted more of that plot line though, as I felt the book focused more on her interactions with Riley, her helping him out with his little, albeit important, problem. We don't get much, or rather any, interaction with Jessica and her parents until the very end, which a "resolution" that felt a bit rushed and "too easy", if you know what I mean. And with Riley, the buildup was very subtle and gradual, a bit too slow for my taste, really. I definitely loved their banter and there were quite a few moments where I cracked up and reveled in their fun, but otherwise, I felt the story as a whole was a bit lackluster.

I guess what I'm saying is, if you're going to go the "break free from parents" route, then have more interactions with the parents so we get a better feel of their relationship.
