5.0 out of 5 stars the sweet truth
I thought the recipes are really good and creative. It takes a while to get all those unusual ingredients together but I tried 3 recipes and liked them and did not gain weight. It will take me a while to get totally into it as it is a whole lifestyle , kitchen and pantry change.

The author provides a list of "must have" ingredients to always have on hand - but most all of the recipes call for items that are not on the list and these items are not run-of-the-mill grocery store stock. Many of the recipes seem to be quite involved. For example, the chocolate chip cookie recipes not only involve mixing the dough - but also require freezing the cookies on the cookie sheets for 30 minutes before baking. I don't know about you, but I don't have that much freezer space. When the author tells me to pull out my dehydrater to prepare fruit for her recipes, I put the book aside. I am not a professional cook. I need good recipes that don't consume a lot of time to make and that are practical. These recipes may produce great food, if you have hours to devote to the process. The book is expensive compared to others, so unless you have a lot of time and close proximity to a natural foods market, I would not invest in it.

Kelly has done an amazing job teaching us how to enjoy the sweet lfe without sugar! Her hemp balls are amazing! I love using Stevia in my food.I have been using it for years and Kelly has taught me how to cook with it too!Her cookbook should be in the kitchen of every household, especially if you have a food allergy to wheat and sugar.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Book, August 30, 2007
This review is from: The Sweet Truth: A Sugar-Free / Wheat-Free Kitchen (Paperback)
I have found these recipes to be great tasting and fairly easy to make. The information she shares in the beginning of the book is most helpful in reference to eating wheat free/gluten free!

2.0 out of 5 stars Frustrated!, February 18, 2008

I don't like to give poor reviews, but I feel I should let others know that this book has not met my expectations. I am currently eating gluten and sugar-free, so naturally this book appealed to me! However, it seems to be just too hard to use. First of all, the list of required cooking equipment fills an entire page. (Granted, it is written in a large font, but there are -37- items on the list.) Second, I am unable to find many of the ingredients, like flavoured liquid stevia (she lists a few different flavours), Stevia Plus Powder, Valrhona unsweetened dark cocoa powder, etc. I am willing to make the extra effort to cook gluten/sugar-free, but if several of the ingredients are unavailable in my local, well-stocked health food stores, I begin to get discouraged. Third, there are no substitutions listed, in case you don't have the exact ingredients. Fourth, the lists of ingredients for the recipes are quite long and the explanations are sometimes unclear. Though this book seemed like a great choice at first, I have not made a single recipe from it because it just seems so impractical. If you are willing to order/purchase a number of specialized ingredients and equipment, this book may work for you. (The recipes do sound delicious.) I am accustomed to buying special flours and ingredients, but this is too much for me.

5.0 out of 5 stars Delicious Healthful Dishes! What more could I ask?, June 24, 2009
This review is from: The Sweet Truth: A Sugar-Free / Wheat-Free Kitchen (Paperback)
When I opened Kelly's book and saw she already had a grocery list of items in the front, I knew I was home! I collect (and use) cookbooks and have hundreds and have always loved to cook. Since I'm now 10 weeks gluten-free (and 13 pounds lighter!), I was more than happy to work with The Sweet Truth! Yes, it took some time to adjust to all the weird language and ingredients and I did have to search through Trader Joe's and Whole Foods to find some specialty items over the past 10 weeks, but now I have a fully-stocked, healthy cabinet! My two teens don't even know that the desserts they have been devouring are GF! Beef bourguignon last night had GF baking mix for a thickener instead of flour and no one but me knew the difference.... I figure, it took me a lot of years to get to where I am today, it will take me a bit to adjust to how I cook going forward for me and my family. The extra time and effort are well worth the investment for my entire familiy's health. KEEP ON COOKING!

2.0 out of 5 stars Not so sweet, December 28, 2008
This review is from: The Sweet Truth: A Sugar-Free / Wheat-Free Kitchen (Paperback)
In this cookbook I expected to find practical recipes. There were too many strange ingredients that didnt even sound good. The sweetner choices werent much better. I didnt find any of the recipes appetizing or compatible with our diet. We are on a gluten free casein free diet and we are trying for sugar free. This book wouldve been better using more stevia or erythritol.

5.0 out of 5 stars mmmmmm, August 24, 2008

So far so good. The sugar cookies are really good and filling. Most all of the ingredients were at the local natural food store with one exception but it is fine. I am looking forward to trying the rest of the recipes and the health benefits to overcome my own sugar addiction.

If you have taken the time to order this book from Amazon, then you should stop and do a search for the ingredients you are whimpering about. They're right here and can be delivered right to your home. As for substitutions, your Google search should alleviate your other concerns. Stop typing reviews and start researching, you'll feel better.
