What follows is the text from most of the accompanying video review. There are, however, somethings that require more than the written word...

The SweetPea 3 is well thought out and nicely built. If ecology is important to you then you'll be happy they used minimal packaging while still keeping everything safe and secure. I also liked that you can open the box with your bare hands. They did toss in a USB cable for loading music and I guess you can never have too many of those.

The player has a rubberized feel. It doesn't make it any softer if your child chooses to use this as a weapon but it does provide a better grip when they're using it to play music. While it is extremely durable it is not waterproof so you'll have to take a bit of care around the pool or at the beach.

The front of the device has three buttons, a very nice speaker, and a clear (but unlit) display. When the player is powered on it displays the battery level, volume level, song number, playlist number, and status. There is no child accessible volume control.

Holding down the two outer buttons for six seconds brings up a menu that allows you, the adult, to select from three play lists (collections of songs or stories, set the volume for the speaker and headphones, and set other options.
The back of the player has the battery compartment, secured by a couple screws, and a convenient reminder about how to invoke the menu. The headphone and AC adapter jacks are on one side and the USB connector is on the other. Before you ask, the player will not recharge batteries the AC adapter is not included.

When you connect the player to a computer it appears as a disk drive with three folders representing the three play lists.

We purchased a SweetPea for each of our two grandsons. They're pretty much indestructible (the SweetPeas... not the grandsons!), and perfect for small hands to carry. The SweetPeas come with some pre-recorded music, and offer the option of easily adding your own through a USB connection to your computer. In addition to uploading some of our favorite children's songs, each of us took turns at reading our favorite children's book (using our computer's microphone and saving it as an MP3 file), then uploading it to the SweetPea. Even when we're not there, the boys can hear Gigi and Grandaddy reading their favorite story to them. The exterior of the SweePea has a rubberized feel for easy gripping, and the hole/handle is a perfect size for little hands. Plenty of adult-accessible controls to customize the unit for your child's specific needs (auto-volume control, auto-off timer, default directory selection). Our older grandson (4) could easily scroll through the song selection in the dark to find his favorite song.

Four thumbs up from these two VERY satisfied grandparents!

I'll start by saying that we might have bought a lemon. Perhaps I would echo some of the enthusiastic reviews if I wasn't sending my dead unit back.

I'll also add that when it did work, my 16 month old loved it.

However, there are some problems with this player's design. I understand that making the SweetPea difficult to use makes it hard for your kid to mess it up, but why make it so frustrating? Changing the volume takes 5 separate steps. Replacing the battery involves finding a small screw-driver and removing 2 tiny screws. That's not a problem if the batteries last a while, but if they die frequently, it's a real chore. Want to change play-lists? Well, it's back to the child-proof menu system and several steps later you're done.

A suggestion for the SweetPea4: Put a child proof switch on the unit that shuts off access to the controls. That way your kid can't crank the volume to 11 without your help, but you can actually make some adjustments to the device when you need to without invoking menu system. The current user interface is very frustrating.

Again, if all of these compromises had meant that the device was indestructible, they would be easier to overlook. The fact that ours died after only a couple of weeks of light use is disheartening.

Update: Interesting to see Anne C's comments. Unlike Anne, I have had no such luck with the company. When I contacted them, they told me to take my problem to the reseller. Still waiting for my replacement unit. I will update again when it arrives.

Update 2: My replacement unit has arrived and so far... It works! Battery life seems much improved, and all the basics are good.

I bought the SweetPea for my son for his third birthday. He loved it. While I wasn't completely satisfied with the method for changing the settings on the SweetPea, I also liked that my son had no control over the volume. After a month of operating just fine, the SweetPea's speaker just stopped working. Unfortunately, it was after Amazon's 30 day return deadline so I had to work with the manufacturer to resolve the issue (as per the guidelines posted on Amazon). I contacted the manufacturer through their website, but did not receive a reply. I waited a week and then submitted another request to be contacted through their "contact us" link on the website. Still no reply. I found their facebook page and posted a thread in the discussions forum. I finally received a reply later that day.

Someone at the company responded to me via email and advised that usually Amazon deals with it as they've paid Amazon to handle the warranty issues, but that I could mail the product to the "address below." The address below was a Canadian address. No further directions or instructions were included in the email so I replied to ask if they knew if I could still return it to Amazon since they had an arrangement with them, thinking maybe their arrangement superceded Amazon's 30 day return policy on electronics.

The gentleman responded with, "I have no idea what Amazon's return policies are. Send it to me. I'll fix it." The email was abrupt and, in my opinion, bordering on rude. He clearly expected me to pay to ship their defective product to Canada with absolutely no time frame for the return of the product. Not only that, but not once did I receive any sort of apology for the inconvenience of having to deal with returning/replacing their defective product.
