Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com Review

When Rosemary Rogers penned her classic Sweet Savage Love in the '70s it wasn't uncommon for the hero to rape the heroine in a romance. Sandra Hill knew that the rape scene had to go if she reworked Steve and Ginny's classic romance for Leisure's Legendary Lover's line. What to do? She made this "Ginny," also known as Dr. Harriet Ginoza, a psychiatrist who specializes in women's fantasies, particularly "forceful seduction." In the 1990s Dr. Ginoza makes sense, but when she finds she has gone back in time to the 1870s and runs into Etienne, a chauvinistic, gun-slinging secret agent, she has a hard time making him see reason. You will laugh your way through this incredibly humorous and sexy tribute to Rosemary Roger's classic.

Review

Sandra Hill is not a newcomer to the time-travel realm, and she is certainly not trying to rewrite history. With Sweeter Savage Love, however, she is plainly making a statement. And that statement borders on the sensational. While I cannot say that I am not prejudiced (I loved Sandra's Frankly, My Dear), I must say I never expected such a shelf-burner from her. In a story that springs from comedy to spy-thriller, Dr. Harriet Ginoza finds herself in love with Etienne Baptiste, a seriously fantastic man with male-chauvinist pig tendencies. The problem (other than the male-chauvinist thing)? Well, Harriet is an overly serious psychologist/feminist from 1997, and Etienne is the man from her incredibly seductive dreams. At least she thought he was her nightly seducer, that is until she realizes she actually IS in 1870 and he actually IS a Union spy. From the very beginning of this novel, I found myself wondering where Sandra came up with such realistic characters. By the end of the book, I was wondering how she had researched some of the more...shall we say...heated elements of the book. Another element reader's might find fun about this book is its unique play on Rosemary Rogers' Sweet Savage Love. If you haven't ever read this book (as I had not), you may find yourself scanning the shelves of your local bookstore for it very shortly after finishing this one. I don't want to go any farther with that or it will ruin Sandra's hard work. Suffice it to say, this is a story that promises very steamy love scenes, exhausting and stimulating, not for the shy and faint of heart. However, if you're in the mood for something a bit on the racy side or a bit off the cuff, give it a try...see what you think...have a little fun.Sensational...I could hardly put it down. Definitely a heart-pounder. Once again Sandra Hill strikes with humor, character, and artistry. Sweeter Savage Love is hot...hot...hot! The passion of this romance is compounded only by Sandra's talent for compelling drama and dry wit.Karen Ellington -- Copyright © 1994-97 Literary Times, Inc. 5.0 out of 5 stars 5 star sequel to Frankly My Dear..., November 3, 2000
This review is from: Sweeter Savage Love (Mass Market Paperback)
This is the story of Etienne Baptiste, the little boy from the first book. He is 31 years old now and just left the Civil War and imprisonment in Andersonville. He is on his way to complete a secret mission for the government one last time before he goes home for good, but Fate steps in and he runs into a woman named Harriet Ginoza. She is a famous psychologist from 1997. A weird twist of fate propelled her back 127 years. She thinks Etienne is the man in her neverending dreams of "forceful seduction". She has an obsession with Rosemary Rogers classic "Sweet Savage Love", first written in the 1970's. So she thinks he is Steve Morgan, the main character from the book come to "forcefully seduce" her once again. Soon she realizes she isn't dreaming and he isn't going to seduce her at all, hahaha. Etienne has many emotional scars from the war and is bitter. He doesn't need a woman interferring in his life. Soon Harriet comes to realize she was sent to help him with her modern skills in healing people's minds. The one thing she didn't count on was falling in love with the "male chauvanistic pig", as she would say. This story was funny as you would come to expect from Sandra Hill and she brings back my favorite characters from "Frankly My Dear..", it all blends well and will have you laughing and almost crying in parts. the funny thing about this book is, if you pay attention close enough and have already read Rosemary Rogers classic, "Sweet Savage Love", then you will pick up on the little quirks she throws into the tale with Etienne(which is French for Steve) and Harriet Ginoza(which she is referred to as Dr. Ginny), which are the main characters from Roger's book. All of Sandra Hill's books are hysterical and the men in her books are beyond sexy, they steam up the pages. =)

5.0 out of 5 stars Hot, Hot, Hot!, September 26, 2000
This review is from: Sweeter Savage Love (Mass Market Paperback)
This book sizzles. Harriet is feisty, sexy and intelligent. Etienne is....red-hot! The love scenes in this book are steamy, and get added to my list of "things I wanna try". (Just kidding!). Sandra Hill really knows how to hook a reader, and this book led to my rushing out and ordering more of her titles. The only thing that irritated me after a while was all the "dumb-men" jokes. I liked the interaction between Harriet and Etienne, and the secondary characters were fabulous. Cain and Abel deserve their own novels, and the witty repartee is excellent.

Harriet heals Etienne's war scars, and fights for the man she loves. She also heals the breach between Etienne and his daughter, and as a psychiatrist, she is well-equipped to do this. The plot is excellent, the dialogue flowing, and the humour excellent. A keeper, for sure.
