4.0 out of 5 stars This is deep house, May 11, 2005
This review is from: Sweeter Sounds (Audio CD)
So deep this house is Cold War era subterranean fallout bunker deep. Soulful and soothing.

The Rurals are a group of talented musicians in the studio with a habit of laying down a canvas of warm synths and soulful chord progressions using the Fender Rhodes, on which the guitar and alto sax paint a colorful, blissful picture of rural southern England on a hazy summer day. The keyboarding is simple for the most part, but is still groovy and soulful, just not in the disco revival Joe Negro\Michele Chiavarini sense (their stuff is great too). No funky tech-house beats to be found either. Just a straight 4\4 rhythm with Conga accents. Unadulterated jazzy deep house -head bobbing- but laid back. A unique sound.

Mary has a beautiful voice with a subtle rhythmic sense like Billie Holiday, but with a velvety smoothness. Cruise to this, day or night. Ironically, the blissfully sunny picture conjured by this album works well on cloudy days to -taking the edge off possible seasonal affective disorders. Up-tempo, but relaxing enough for the chill-out lounge.

Within reason, this CD is definitely worth the import money.

This album has the same feeling as Blue Six's Beautiful Tomorrow. It does not have the same deep soul feeling, but it shines on being very laid back and funky. To quote my girl from Sex in the City -- I Likey!!

If you are a naked music fan, this CD is a must for your collection. This is some of the finest jazzy house around. You can wake to it go to sleep to it and all those things in between.

5.0 out of 5 stars Tasty, mellow, jazzy-house, January 8, 2002

A consistenly great vocal house groove with an organic feel, i.e., real bass, saxophone, all dipped in a sexy, minimalist disco-jazz vibe. Excellent!

4.0 out of 5 stars If you like this you'll love......, August 30, 2003
This review is from: Sweeter Sounds (Audio CD)
The Rurals sound sends chills down my spine. This is a great album for anyone who loves really deep (not always danceable) house that you can just sit back and bounce your head to however....the best Rurals CDs aren't even available on Amazon yet. Emotional Feelings released in 2003 is my favorite by far. Great vocals, great organ, toned down on the drum machine loops--just great. Find this CD and buy it! Also check out Headsongs--first album with Mary's now distinct "Rurals vocals" and some great tunes you've probably seen on a compilation or two i.e. Modulating Sneakers. Reinterpretations 2003 remixes some classics and is a good listen too but in my opinion, you shouldn't remix perfection. Finally look for a similiar grove from a group called Reel People I am sure they'll show up on Amazon sooner or later.
