Fifties crooner's finest music, October 6, 2002
This review is from: Sweeter Than Wine (Audio CD)
There have been three Jimmie Rodgers - a blues singer, a country singer and a pop/folk singer - the pop/folk singer is the subject of this compilation. This Jimmie Rodgers is most famous in America for Honeycomb, a #1 hit. It was followed by a string of other hits, three of which (Kisses sweeter than wine, Uh-oh I'm falling in love again and Secretly) sold well enough to earn Jimmie gold disks. In Britain, his biggest hits (both top ten) were Kisses sweeter than wine and English country garden (which was only a B-side in America).
All these hits, plus others that also charted in Britain or America, are included on this collection, which includes some singles that failed to chart anywhere, some B-sides and some album tracks. Jimmie preferred folk songs while his record label wanted to market him as a pop singer. Both genres are in evidence here, though most tracks are a mix of the two. The wreck of the John B is a song that has been recorded under various titles, but is best known now as Sloop John B.
This is the best compilation of Jimmie's music yet released, though some of his original albums have been released on twofers for those who wish to explore his music in greater depth.
