Book Description

Lord Trey Worthington isn’t about to give his heart to a woman. He does not want a marriage like his parents. But when his mother brings in a childhood acquaintance into the home to sponsor into society, Trey has to get Miss Faraday trained properly. The more he gets to know Judith, the more he yearns for something he doesn’t dare reach for. Judith is after a faithful husband—something Trey has been convinced most of his life he’ll never become.

Judith Faraday is only after one thing—to marry her Naval Officer and enjoy a life full of love. She’s doubtful her dream will ever come true while living as the ward to the dowager duchess. However, the longer Judith is with the dowager’s son, Trey, an attraction blossoms. Judith now wonders if God has different plans for her life, because Trey doesn’t believe in the sanctity of marriage . . . the very thing Judith cannot do without.

****

Unconscious, she was nothing but dead weight. Yet in Trey's arms, she fit perfectly. He didn’t want to examine why he felt this way, so he yanked the quilt over their heads and cuddled closer, resting his chin on her forehead.

Inhaling her jasmine scent, he smiled. He’d always loved women who smelled like heaven. Mentally, he scolded himself for thinking such a thing. And what made it worse was her warm breath blowing against his skin, creating shivers to burst through him.

With effort he halted the improper strain of thoughts. Strange she hadn’t moved, other than her steady breathing. Was something wrong with her? His mother wouldn’t be able to handle a sickly ward when the older woman battled with health issues herself.

The crowd of searchers gathered near the window, and Trey tried to pick up bits from their conversation. As he strained to hear, the woman next to him stirred and let out a small moan.

Silently, he grumbled. He knew exactly what she’d do when she regained her bearings. He tightened his arms around her body to keep her from lashing out. Although he had her arms pinned, he worried what he’d do if she screamed. And most assuredly, she would.

Her eyelids fluttered open. A frown pulled on her lips as she tried to move her arms. Blinking the haze of unconsciousness from her eyes, she looked at the blanket covering their heads before turning to meet his stare. Her eyes widened. Recognition must have struck, because panic lit her gaze, and she opened her mouth. Without thinking of the consequences, he covered her mouth with his, silencing the scream he knew was forthcoming. He couldn’t let her go. Her reputation was at stake . . . Not to mention his cherished bachelorhood.

“Shhh,” he mumbled against her mouth. “I’m not going to hurt you. We must be quiet.”

She jerked her head away and pummeled his chest with her fists. He yanked her hands above her head and held them with a strong grip. “A search party is after you. Please, I’m trying to hide you and save your reputation.”

“I don’t think kissing—”

“Now is not the time to think!” Using his free hand, Trey held her face while his mouth took over again. Though he only kissed her to shut her up, warmth spread throughout him this time and he found he quite enjoyed this intimate embrace. Soon her lips softened, and he sensed her surrender. The kiss turned to something more tender.

Her mouth responded, the touch tentative and so sweetly naïve he was consumed by the need to show her his gentle side—a side he didn’t normally show to women. As her lips matched his kisses, he slowly released her hands. Hesitantly, her palms slid over his arms to his shoulders and settled naturally about his shoulders.

What was he doing? And why, pray, was he enjoying it? He was more than enjoying it, thunder roared in his ears, and pounded in his head. No woman had ever affected him thus.

5.0 out of 5 stars I loved this book! January 31, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
"The Sweetest Kiss" excels in delivering a keenly romantic experience to its readers. Every touch and every love scene between the hero and heroine simmers with passion and conflict as Judith Farady and Trey Worthington fall in love against their past experiences, inner fears, and doubts. Trey is the emobdiment of masculine virility and charm who unwilling finds himself falling in love with Judith. He refuses to accept the idea that love can last. The romance is keenly delicious and masterfully portrayed, and the ending was a GREAT surprise but was highly satisfying. "The Sweetest Kiss" was hard to put down.

I love Ms. Higgin's novels and will continue to read her books as they come out. She creates vibrant, colorful characters and clean, but passionate, romance in which her readers may immerse themselves and drift into another realm.

4.0 out of 5 stars Fans of Jane Austen Will Enjoy! July 31, 2012
By Blu
Format:Kindle Edition
When I first heard that "The Sweetest Kiss" by Marie Higgins was a 'clean' romance - I initially thought this meant it was an inspirational/Christian romance. I've since come to learn that a 'clean' romance is one where the developing romance between the hero and heroine is favored over the sexual tension and love scenes. In other words, it was 'sweet'.

I loved the beginning when Lady Judith Faraday sneaks out of her home to meet her fiance, Alex, and runs into the 'highway men' instead. I laughed til I almost cried! Judith is a very likable heroine, a bit childish acting at times, but likable all the same. The measures she took to capture Trey's attentions and dissuade her other suitors were clever and amusing.

Trey Worthington...I really liked him. He was the perfect combination of rogue and gentleman. I did find his hesitation to give his heart to Judith understandable at first but after awhile I wanted to scream, "Get over yourself already!" so he and Judith could begin their happily ever after.

My favorite character however was Trey's best friend, Nic. I am so hoping he has his own story coming out...and soon!

Although "The Sweetest Kiss" is classified as a clean romance, it is very sensual at times. However, this does not dissuade from the reading of the novel at all. In fact, it only adds to the level of feeling that Judith and Trey feel for one another. It's sensual yet very tasteful.

I would recommend this novel to fans of Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice or Emma. (Originally Reviewed for Not Now...Mommy's Reading)

Strong, intelligent heroes learning from and overcoming real doubts and struggles made this book an enjoyable read. The social maneuvering by the characters was an added bonus.

4.0 out of 5 stars Humorous romance novel March 10, 2013

The novel started off strong with humor and kept going until the end. You find yourself rooting for Trey and Judith from the beginning. Who can outwit whom first before realizing they are right for one another. A good read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sweet Regency Romance July 2, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This book has everything I'm looking for when I read:
1-Intense sexual chemistry between the H and h, but no sex! These days that's hard to find in a book.
2- clean language
3- well developed plot that was believable
4- thought out characters who are likeable
Thank you Mrs. Higgins for being a great storyteller, but also for having integrity in your writing. It is refreshing to read a book that I don't have to cringe my way through because of sex or language. I will be reading more of your books!

2.0 out of 5 stars Not too good February 21, 2014
By LB
Format:Kindle Edition
I read about 2/3 the way through the book before I decided that I was wasting my time.

I thought that this would be a clean, light read. While I didn't come across any graphic details, I got tired of the story. Most of the relationship between the hero and heroine was too much based on attraction only. They kept having reoccurring thoughts of what they wanted to do with each other. Both seem to think that they must be in love if they feel jealous about the other. Dysfunctional! The heroine seems nice enough, but no real details given of having a life outside of her relationship with Hero and his mother. Only one supportive cast member with a bit of a story to him. This story was drawn out list of kisses, accusations, and poor decisions to be much of anything else. Wish I hadn't paid for this. Will not seek more from this author
