Donald Brown,educator,composer,arranger,and one of the great all-around pianist on the scene.This is a great session,as Donald hooks up with Alan Dawson(drums),Steve Nelson(vibes),and Charnett Moffet(bass).Old friends Dawson and Brown always spur each other on,with the superb support of Moffett,and Steve Nelson on vibes.Great playing all around.Highlights were 'I Should Care',where Brown's talents as an arranger for small ensembles really shines.I'll let the music speak for itself.Let's consider this a great tribute to the late Alan Dawson who contributed so much to the field as a teacher and a player.By the way he hooked up Tony Williams with Miles Davis,and the birth of one of the greatest Quintets ever assembled was born.Hope you enjoy it

Evidence Music, Inc., has been releasing versions of jazz recordings made by Japanese labels in the late '80s--recordings that were never released in the U.S. The Sweetest Sounds features Donald Brown on piano, supported on all cuts by Charnett Moffett on bass and Aland Dason on drums, plus Steve Nelson on vibes on four of the eleven cuts. Both the music and the sound quality can be described as full-bodied, robust, good-natured, communicative, swinging... you get my drift.

It's a shame that this recording was unavailable in the U.S. for so long, but thanks to Evidence, jazz fans can hear for themselves the truly sweet sounds produced by Brown and his fellow musicians. I'm sure some readers will be willing to set me straight when I confess I have no idea what Donald Brown has done since this recording (I had never heard of him, and put this CD in my player out of a sense of duty, with no real expectations), but he ought to be star by now, judging from his work on this CD.
