Produced by long-time collaborator John Platania (Van Morrison, Bonnie Raitt, Chip Taylor), it is a classic mix of acoustic blues and soulful originals and his most personal album yet.

Starting off with his unique take on the Bob Dylan classic "Sweetheart Like You," Davis takes us back to his home with songs about love, family and the hard paths life takes. He includes unique takes on blues classics like Muddy Waters' "Can't Be Satisfied" and Lead Belly's "Follow Me Down."

Displaying more than his blues roots, SWEETHEART LIKE YOU features some of Guy's finest songwriting with tunes that are alternately humorous and heartbreaking, from the playful "Slo Motion Daddy," to the powerful "Angels Are Calling." Deeply personal, "Words to My Mama's Song" was inspired by his own mother, activist and actress Ruby Dee.

"My mother is a remarkable woman. So much of this song is her voice inside of my head," Guy says. "There's also a little bit of her brother Edward's spirit in that composition." Certainly a familial number, "Words to My Mama's Song" features Guy's son Martial contributing spoken word and funky vocal percussion. It captures the album's theme of hope and resilience despite heartache and hard times. That spirit is never more present than on the album's final moving number "Ain't Goin' Down."

I ordered this CD after hearing Slo Motion Daddy on the radio. This is the first contemporay blues CD I have bought in years. I really like it. "Sweet Hannah" is playing now while I write this. The songs are varied from sweet to rough. I am too much an amateur at blues music to say much except I highly recommend this CD. I was very pleased!

Guy Davis is one of the few music artists whose albums I will buy on sight, and for good reason. He's simply one of the best living bluesmen on the planet. Guy's style is acoustic and deeply traditional, but with enough variation and experimentation to keep things from ever getting dull. "Words to My Mama's Song," for instance, combines some powerful - even angry - lyrics with rap-inspired vocal percussion by Guy's son, Martial, but still sounds every bit a blues song: a thoroughly modern take on the genre. Songs like "Bring Back Storyville" and "Follow me Down" are straight from blues' soul-satisfying roots, and "The Angels are Calling" is a beautiful gospel-flavored number. And what Guy Davis album would be complete without something at least a little naughty? Just try to listen to "Slow Motion Man" without cracking a grin.

Another great album, Guy! Keep 'em coming!

The title track of this CD, "Sweetheart Like You" is a Dylan composition done with lush backing & soulful harmonica. Guy Davis's treatment of some other well known blues songs, such as "Hoochie Coochie Man", "Baby Please Don't Go" & "Follow Me Down" is genuine & heartfelt... makes ya wanna pick some cotton. "Sweet Hannah" pleads and bleeds love, with soulful backing vocals by Bernadette Marnell-Polumbo & Joannn Marnell. Guy Davis is a relatively young man who has the gift of sounding like an old blues master. First rate!
