3.0 out of 5 stars A bit of seasoning will do wonders for their music, January 23, 2009
This review is from: Sweethearts of the Neighborhood (Audio CD)
Many a young band tries to stitch together an identity that sets them apart from their predecessors; the Dedringers take the opposite tact and revel in some serious rock `n roll and roots traditions, alternately covering Townes Van Zandt and channeling early Stones on the songs found on "Sweetheart of the Neighborhood." It's almost a shame this recording opens with the powerhouse track Sideman's Blues because it takes some time to come down enough to really listen to the slower, softer tracks that follow.

The fiery opening track and very cool final number Come with Me bookend a set of good, not always remarkable songs, but all played with plenty spirit. To me, that suggests the Dedringers are still working to infuse the energy and intensity of their performances into their recordings and are a band on the bubble, close to breaking out from the pack.

Sean Faires and Jonny Burke share songwriting and singing duties, and their rhythm section helps keep an edge throughout, even on the more fragile, softer tracks. I hope this band sticks around as I think a bit of seasoning will do wonders for their music. (I cannot quite give this CD four stars, but it's really better than three stars might convey.)
