5.0 out of 5 stars this band should be way more known. November 24, 2013
By Robbie
Format:Audio CD
i have this album and i just have to say i love it. it kinda makes me sad how unknown this band is, and i think they should have gone WAY farther than they did. its a real waste of talent how they just died off so quickly.

3.0 out of 5 stars Criminally Overlooked DFW Band August 22, 2003
Format:Audio CD
Funland was one of the bands from the Dallas/Fort Worth scene in the early Nineties that was definitely poised for bigger and better things. Their sound, a catchy, stripped-down "alternative" sound that was grungy enough in spots to earn comparative points to Nirvana, but still just basic, catchy blue-collar rock & roll at heart with a modern edge I guess one might refer to it as "Modern Power Pop." Arista signed them with a lot of promises they never delivered to the band. The label needed a token "grunge" band on their roster, and this seven-track EP is the sole product of that relationship. Although it is a fine (and cheap) intro to the band, it is not the best thing they recorded. For those further interested, you definitely need to check out their self-titled album, independently released in 1995. Frontman Peter Schmidt's voice is in fine form and the dual guitar efforts of he and lead guitarist Clark Vogeler (later of the Toadies) play out well on the good tracks, in some spots reminiscent of old-school ZZ Top. The good tracks here are really good, like "City of Wet Angels," "Fall Away," "Drop of a Hat," and "Hate Thing." The others sound a bit underdeveloped, but this is only an EP, and no doubt the label had a hand in putting a curb on what the band could really do at this point. A silly between-tracks viginette ("Amarillo") is listed on the tracklist, and it could have easily been used as an intro to one of the actual songs and the cheeky Air Supply cover ("Lost In Love") is good, but nothing too special.

2.0 out of 5 stars Scratched October 29, 2010

I love this album, and that's why I was sad that it was scratched and only three of the songs played. :(
