NOBODY PLAYED LIKE HARRY SWEETS EDISON,
This review is from: Sweets at the Haig (Audio CD)
Majority of this CD is taken by a BRILLIANT live jazz album "Sweets at The Haig", one of the most satisfactory trumpet experiences one can imagine... Harry "Sweets" Edison really stretches out, showing the warmth, the power and the swing that makes him a true giant of jazz trumpet... The rest of the band is OK (Arnold Ross-p, Joe Comfort-b), particularly the drummer Alvin Stoller who swings intelligently... But Edison is MAGNIFICENT. Incidentally, he plays a lot of open horn (non-muted trumpet), which is a sound I can always enjoy...
Three additional tracks are by "Buddy Rich All Stars", including, in addition to Sweets, Benny Carter (as), Georgie Auld (ts) and Jimmy Rowles (p). Swinging, indeed... A must have for trumpet fans, swing fans, mainstream fans and Sweets fans. |
