I first heard Sweetwater on FM radio back when this first album came out in 1968, and they played the classic and awesome song "My Crystal Spider" all the time. When I first heard it I had thought it sounded like Jefferson Airplane and Grace Slick singing, but then found out it was Nanci Nevins singing and the band Sweetwater. I got the album and was immediately impressed at how good this group was and the musicians, but absolutely loved Nanci Nevins vocals. This band were the first one to hit the stage at Woodstock in 1969. Tragedy struck the band with a horrible accident, a movie was made, and then they got back together to release a live CD of some of their old songs. This group was excellent and still today highly underrated. This is classic 60's rock/psychedlia/folk and an excellent album!

This album was very unique at the time of its popularity. This group really had a tremendous blend of instruments and harmonies. Their lead singer, Nancy Nevins was a pure joy to hear. Their music reflected a lot of the social attitudes of the day. Unfortunately, I believe Nancy Nevins was injured in a car accident that damaged her vocal ability, cutting short what many thought to be the most promissing talent of the time. Buy the CD if you like great music from the 60's. If you have never heard Sweetwater you are in for a rare treat!

Great music....takes you back to the 60's when "peace conciousness" was triggered, and I believe one of the first multi racial bands...
My favorite song on this CD is "Motherless Child"...the vocals are top notch...good old band "Sweetwater"...thanks for the inspiring music and ground breaking statements.

From Live to the Album,

I experienced Sweetwater in the 1969/1970 timeframe with my future wife at a concert at University of California Santa Barbara (UCSB) They opened for Crosby, Stills and Nash. Had never heard them before, but they charmed me immediately with their Jazz, Rock and Classical music. If I remember correctly, they received a standing ovation and were brought back on stage for an encore, knowning CS & N were in the wings! My favorite has to be What's Wrong. Musically and, of course, the message. I bought the album on the way home to Ventura! I recommend it for those who remember the 60's and for those who want to experience it!

Sweetwater was supposed to be the first act at the 1969 Woodstock festival. This cd is as beautiful today as it was over 35 years ago.

I tried to love this. I really did.
I don't. But I do like it. Sweetwater showed up on Reprise in 1969 with a flute, a few percussionists, cello, standard guitar bass and drums and a women singer, Nancy Nivens. They opened Woodstock that year. You would think from my description that Sweetwater were an art rock band--no. The material on this album is pretty easy-going. Sweetwater settles into a mid tempo groove and hangs there for their whole debut. They do good rock songs the way you would expect a more FM oriented band to in 1969. You would think with such an elaborate set up this band would stretch a little. But most of these tracks are short songs; think of a much quieter, less daring Jefferson Airplane. Nevins is a good singer, but has neither the natural pipes of Janis Joplin or the in-your-face clarity of Grace Slick. Even the bongo player plods happily along, never letting it get above 50 degrees. Santana, Airplane, a lot of Sweetwater's Woodstock cohorts had albums in `1969 that were far more adventurous than this. Nice band. Too nice. Sweetwater didn't push themselves.
