I just made a very disappointing recipe from this book....Mary Lawrence's Peaches and Cream Pie. It was a disaster. I was very deliberate with my ingredients, especially when baking, and I checked this recipe again and again to be sure I followed the recipe as written. The recipe says to bake about 35 minutes or until knife inserted in center comes out clean. I follow...

I love this book! Every woman should gift this to a young lady in her life. The book is not only filled with wonderful recipes, but what makes it so special are the stories that accompany the recipes. This book is worth it for the womanly wisdom alone.

The pies are very varied - there's even a section on cereal pies! The piecrust recipe included at the beginning of the book is a nice all-purpose crust. I like the decorating suggestions. Previously, I thought there were only two ways to decorate a piecrust.

I think this book is a wonderful way to connect to the women in your life. Older women can affirm the warm stories and advice. For younger women, it's almost a rights-of-passage book. I will share this book with the women in my family.

About the pies. I tried "Sister Baby's buttermilk Pie." It is good. The recipe was clear and easy to follow. I won't make every pie in the book, but there are a few more I'd like to try.

5.0 out of 5 stars FABULOUS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!, October 15, 2007
This review is from: Sweety Pies: An Uncommon Collection of Womanish Observations, with Pie (Hardcover)
I ordered this because I'm so fond of the author's first book -- and, if anything, love this one even more. All of the recipes are warmly written, prefaced by descriptions of where they came from, and why they're so wonderful -- and they're written with sufficient clarity to virtually guarantee success. Both of Ms. Pinner's books are like that -- and indispensable for any collection. I have never been anything but thrilled with any of her recipes, all of which garner raves from my guests. Don't miss this one!

I follow it to the T, and the ingredients just don't solidify or gel as suggested in the recipe. Instead it's a runny mess. I even tried leaving it bake for 10 minutes at a time at least 3 times -- 30 extra minutes total - and it's still runny! The book is a delightful read and has wonderful stories, but so far that's all it is for me. The one recipe I tried was a pie in the face!!! Hey, maybe Mary Lawrence wasn't ready to part with her REAL recipe...

5.0 out of 5 stars Thoroughly 'kitchen cook friendly', November 3, 2007
This review is from: Sweety Pies: An Uncommon Collection of Womanish Observations, with Pie (Hardcover)
Mouth-wateringly illustrated with showcase quality color photography, "Sweety Pies: an Uncommon Collection Of Womanish Observations, With Pie" is a compendium that combines outstanding recipes for a variety of impressive pies with anecdotal commentaries by Patty Pinner about the women with whom many of these recipes are associated. The recipes are arranged in chapters for Berry Pies; Cereal Pies; Cream & Custard Pies; Fruit Pies; Nut & Sweet Vegetable Pies; and Meringue Pies. Of special note is the beginning chapter dedicated to the culinary subject pie crusts. From Dexarae Triplett's Mixed Berry Pie; Carlean's Sweet Potato-Coconut Custard Pie; Sister Chestermae Hayes's Apple Butter Pie; and Benita's Any Flavor Cobbler; to Mayor Ham's Brown Sugar Peach Pie; Alberta Beasley's Decadent Pecan Pie; Mamma's Zucchini Cobbler; and Daddy's Mother's Blueberry Meringue Pie, "Sweety Pies" is a thoroughly 'kitchen cook friendly' and very highly recommended addition to any family or community library cookbook collection.

I learned about this book after reading an excerpt in a magazine. Since receiving the book from Amazon, I cannot put it down. I don't which I like best the recipes or the stories. The book has a wonderful selection of unusual pies that I had no knowledge existed. I tried a few of the cereal pies and they were great.

I love this book!

A wonderful collection of pie recipes, traditions and storytelling. I've tried a few of the recipes with successful results. "Sherry's Chocolate Chip Pecan Pie" and "Walnut Raisin Pie from Elizabethtown" are two of my favorites. Patty Pinner's collection of interesting pies is worth having if you're an avid pie baker.

I bought this cookbook during the summer and have since made several of the pies in this book. Prior to buying this book I had never made a pie, but I now create my own pies. The recipes in the book are highly accessible and easy to follow. I have made several of the pies in here for my family and friends, and they have loved all of them. I absolutely love the pie crust recipe, even after trying others, it is still my favorite. My favorites so far have been the strawberry rhubarb pie, and May Ham's peach pie, which I served with fresh blueberry ice cream at 4th of July (none of it made it home from the party). I highly recommend this book to anyone who is interested in learning to make pies.

4.0 out of 5 stars (RAW Rating: 4.5) - A Treasure Trove of Recipes, May 1, 2009

Think of something sweet, succulent and mouthwatering. Now that I have your attention, I'll tell you what I'm talking about. SWEETY PIES is a beautifully written culinary memoir celebrating memories of the love and sweetness between family and friends sharing recipes, cooking and eating together. Pinner reveals fifty of the most alluring recipes for pies you will ever stir in a bowl. She has written this book with wit and sass and, with personal stories to enhance the feelings behind the recipes. The kitchen has always been the unofficial meeting place because of the soothing warmth and teasing aromas that make us comfortable, and Pinner captures the magic of women sharing soulfulness and love through their kitchens.

She starts with the recipe for a good pie crust, and then, along with traditional recipes, she shares pie recipes that are strangely interesting: Cottage Cheese, Navy Bean Custard, Peanut Butter Cream and Grape Juice Meringue.

SWEETY PIE is more than a cookbook; it is a baking portrait of the women who make life sweeter with pies. It is quite an uncommon collection, but also a blessing and a delight, especially since Pinner emphasizes the time spent in the kitchen with family and friends matters more than the delicious concoctions. The holiday season is an excellent time to pick up a copy and experience something festive and deliciously different.

5.0 out of 5 stars MORE, MORE, MORE!!, August 31, 2008

This review is from: Sweety Pies: An Uncommon Collection of Womanish Observations, with Pie (Hardcover)
This book is fantastic...I've just finished reading it cover to cover and drooling over all the pies...can't wait to get into the kitchen and start baking! While the recipes are terrific what makes this book ever so special is the "womanish" advice and the wonderful stories and anecdotes!! I've just ordered Patty's other book "Sweets: A Collection of Soul Food Desserts and Memories" and can't wait to sit down and read it as well! I surely hope these won't be the only two books written by Patty Pinner...please give us more!
