From the Back Cover

When a cowboy focused on revenge encounters a woman determined to distract him, there's going to be trouble in Texas!

Swept away when her wagon train attempts a difficult river crossing, Ruthy MacNeil isn't terribly upset at being separated from the family who raised her. All they've ever done is work her to the bone. Alive but disoriented, she's rescued by Luke unfortunately, there are more chances to die in her immediate future.

Luke is on a mission to reclaim the ranch stolen from his family. But the men currently on the property won't let it go without a fight. Luke plans to meet up with friends who will help him take back the land, and since he can't just leave Ruthy in the middle of nowhere, she's going to have to go with him.

But the more time Luke spends around the hardworking young woman, the more he finds himself thinking of things besides revenge. Will Ruthy convince him to give up his destructive path and be swept away by love?

"This new series, TROUBLE IN TEXAS, will add to her list of successes if the first installment is any indication... Connealy's style is fast-paced and spritely and sure to keep drawing fans." --Publishers Weekly

"Carol Award-winner Connealy ("THE KINCAID BRIDES" series) has created a strong, independent heroine who meets her match in Luke, the strong, silent type. They clash at first before finding solace in each other, which makes for humorous moments that will please readers who enjoy romantic comedies with a Western flavor." --Library Journal

Known for her bestselling historical romantic comedies, Mary Connealy has sales totaling more than half a million copies. She lives on an eastern Nebraska ranch with her husband, Ivan, and enjoys spending time with her four grown daughters and their families.

OK, so I wasn't sure I was going to like this book at first, I mean it looked and sounded like a light historical book without much substance. Well, I was definitely WRONG about that!
What I thought I was getting: Fluffy historical romance.
What I actually got: A wonderful western!

I will step on some toes and irritate a few people here, but I feel that generally speaking women can't write westerns very well. And so often Christian authors miss the boat, eerrr wagon, on writing good western stories, tending to tame down the bad guys and leave out the shoot-outs. OK, OK, maybe I have watched too many John Wayne movies, but.... Mary Connealy was right on the money with Swept Away! This book had all the grit and tumbleweeds of a good western without the lack of morals.

The main characters were Christians but didn't shy away from defending others with various means of force. Yes, they tried to do everything within the bounds of the law but they also did what it took to get the job done.

So, we have good characters but what else? In my opinion, excellent descriptions of the scenery, but not overdone. The action sequences were fast paced and well placed, kept me turning the next page. I felt the story was believable, emotions, actions, plot, all good. There are some difficult issues in this story, specifically physical and verbal abuse, I felt the author handled this very well, contrasting the harshness of it with the gentle love of a mother for her children and the kindness of strangers.

This book most definitely has the 4-E's. Engaging, Engrossing, Entertaining, Enjoyable.

This is the first Mary Connealy book I have read but it will not be my last and I am anxiously awaiting the release of the 2nd book in this series.

(I received a copy of this book from the Publisher via The Book Club Network in exchange for my honest review.)

Having loved the three prior books I've read by Mary Connealy (Out of Control, In Too Deep, and Over the Edge), I could hardly wait to read Swept Away, book one in her new "Trouble in Texas" series. While I did still really like it, there was just something that kept me from loving it like I did the "Kincaid Brides" series.

I liked the new group of characters and found all of the "Regulators" individual stories very interesting. I loved how close they all were and that they were willing to die for justice. I felt really bad for Ruthy and all she had to go through in her life - she was such a strong woman.

I loved how Swept Away's story was slightly tied into the Kincaid Brides series - even though none of those characters were in this one, the connection was still neat. One thing I didn't like was when it seemed as though the characters would repeat themselves needlessly.

Swept Away had a lot of action and some suspenseful scenes. There were a few twists and my attention was held throughout. I also liked the humor in this novel - I couldn't stop myself from chuckling a few times.

Overall, a great read. While it's not my favorite Mary Connealy read to date, I did really like it and am looking forward to reading book two which is set to release September 2013 - it sounds like it's going to be fantastic! I recommend Swept Away if you enjoy historical books with romance, humor, and cowboys. :)

In my humble opinion~
Ruthy MacNeil is a hard worker, and her "adoptive" family takes advantage of that. They also intend for her to marry their son once they reach their destination. Ruthy's not so fond of that idea, or the family, and is looking for an escape when the wagon she's steering gets swept away (don't you just love the title?) from the train. Luke Stone refuses to leave her behind, even if it means hauling her into the middle of his fight to win back his ranch. Both characters, along with the supporting cast, are sure to wiggle their way into your heart.

Ever read a book where you alternated between smiling and biting your nails? Well, if I bit my nails, this would be the book. Fast-paced action mingled with just the right amount of romance and humor will keep you turning pages long after your bedtime, and is sure to leave you with a smile on your face after you've shut down your kindle. Recommended for all historical lovers, and even those who aren't. Give Mary Connealy (the master of "romantic comedies...with cowboys") and Swept Away a chance. You might become a Connealy fan like me.

The book starts with Ruthy MacNeil in a wagon train heading west getting ready to cross a river. She is very reluctant to do this as storm clouds are gathering and she know that is has been raining upstream. Her adoptive father does not pay attention to her protests. Of course he has never paid any attention to her except to demand she work like a horse and to knock her around. He also expects her to marry his worthless son Virgil. When she gets to the middle of the river her wagon is swept away by a wall of water. Downriver she is rescued by Luke Stone. He is on his way to Broken Wheel, Texas to avenge his pa's murder and to reclaim the ranch that was stolen from him.
At Broken Wheel Luke is met by four of his Andersonville Regulator "brothers". They are there to assist him in regaining his ranch. The man who stole the ranch is not letting go without a fight. He has had gunmen trying to stop him all the way to Texas so he knows he is in for a fight.
Ruthy and Luke hide out in Broken Wheel as there are no other women in town and Luke will be shot on sight if he is seen. As Luke makes plans to regain his ranch, he is also trying to decide what to do with Ruthy. The problem is, Ruthy is not a submissive sort of person and wants to be included in the fight. She has discovered that the wife of the man who killed Luke's pa is being abused and she will not sit by while another woman is being abused. Ruthy is a crack shot and tracker.
This book is the first book in the Trouble in Texas series. I would give this book 3 ½ stars. I enjoyed it but I didn't think it was good as some of the other books I have read by Mary Connealy. I look forward to reading the rest of the books in this series to learn the stories of the men that helped Luke regain his ranch.
I was given this book by Bethany House for an honest review. I was not compensated in any way.
