This product was 3.5 stars, until I realized I don't have to use only their cleaning solution and pads! Now this product is awesome!!! It has always worked better than a mop, of course. But now it works better than it did originally!
#1- I bought a better, reusable, cleaning pad (from my local grocery store) that sticks to the wet jet. The pad is more absorbable, so it doesn't leave a layer of dried solution all over the floors.
#2- The cleaning bottle of solution that "can't be opened" actually can be! All you need is a pair of pliers and the top screws right off. Put your favorite/cheaper cleaning solution inside and the top screws right back on.

I have to say... I must be lucky or something. I have never had a problem with my swiffer wet jet -- except the time I put a pad on upside down... or should I say downside up :) I rarely fill out these review things, but I think only the angry are reviewing this product, so I had to write. I LOVE the product. It is true, you have to get up as much free roaming dirt and particulates as possible before using it. I use the regular swiffer first and a dustbuster occasionally (I bet the combo swiffer with the vacuum would work great). If you do that and you don't have a huge mess to clean, this thing works great. It does leave chemical on the floor, which will spot on shiny tile, but for matte tile and other sealed flooring, it works wonderfly with NO build up -- it doesn't smell bad either. The batteries last a long time. The cleaner does too if you don't spray it all over the place -- a little goes a long way. Foe the people who worry about "disinfecting" the floor... you are nuts. One stroll across the floor and the bacteria/viruses are BAAAAACK, and who eats off the floor anyway... babies maybe... good for their immune systems, I say. FYI Steam cleaning the floor doesn't kill anything. I have one of those too, this is better. I have written enough! Get one and try it!

I got one of these a couple of months ago and at the time was fairly happy with it. I admit that I never mopped as often as I should have and actually mopped more after getting this. OK it was fun or atleast was'nt as much of a pain as mopping. IMO the drawback was the cost of the replacement pads and the unrefillable floor cleaner. In addition it does work ok at getting up spills ect and degreases but it does not disinfect. ALso although I do not have allergies the smell of the cleaner was a bit strong for me and I had to leave the room afterwards because in order for the mop to actually get up stuff you have to use more cleaner than the bottle says. I don't know if this is because of the west Texas dirt and my own family or what. Instead of a bottle lasting a 7 rooms mine only lasts 3 times in a 10 x 10 kitchen.
It is easy to use but not very cost effeciant so the search continued ... And I found something much better that is just as easy to use as the WetJet but actually cleans and disenfects and you wash the pads instead of throwing them away and don't have to keep buying the cleaner...It is the BIssell Steam Mop!! which they sell here too.
The Wet Jet is easy to use, works ok and for 25 bucks well It may work for your budget too but again you have to keep buying more stuff for it. Honestly I cannot stress enough however that for twice the money you can get a better product, that works a lot better at mopping up messes and disinfecting and nothing else to buy. Sorry Swiffer WetJet I have found your replacement and you are going to the garage sale.

My first Swiffer Wet Jet finally broke down after three years of use, not bad for a product that you can buy here for $18.99, and usually find even cheaper in stores.

Since I live in Guatemala, I had to wait months for a new one to arrive. Now, I am the furthest thing from a "neat freak," (as mom would readily attest) but I certainly did miss it.

Although, only when I walked...

Even though I had to pay an extra $26 for shipping and customs, it was still an incredible bargain.

Not only are my floors finally clean again, but I don't procrastinate doing them like I did when I only had a useless old mop.

While waiting for the Wet Jet to arrive, once I did try smearing filthy putrid water from a mop bucket, and I swore never again. I just let my floors get dirty until the Wet Jet finally came.

The criticisms I have read here are ridiculous. People actually complained because they have to sweep the floor before they mop?

How lazy can one be?

I would hate to see the filth on their floors if they never even sweep before they mop!

Yes, the cleaner does spray out a few inches in front of the mophead. I couldn't imagine wanting it any other way. If you are trying to hit a particular spot, just step back a few inches, dude.

Duh...

It is best to first sweep with a broom, then go over the floor with the Swiffer sweeper which statically attracts hairs and fine particles that the regular broom misses, and then finish with the Wet Jet. Three passes, but mopping with the Wet Jet is just as easy as sweeping - no bending, no wringing, no mess.

Just put it to the barefoot test and you'll be amazed. Walk around before and after it dries, and you will cannot help but see and feel the difference on the soles of your feet.

I also have some allergies, but the cleaner doesn't bother me at all.

The only negative is that you can go through the floor cleaner quickly, and it is not cheap. However, the pads are hardly a significant expense.

Thank god I got my Wet Jet back!

I just used this for the first time on both vinyl and hardwood. It's the cleanest my floors have been in a long time.

First, the cons:
1) Way overpriced, and you have to constantly buy overpriced cleaner refills, gazillions of overpriced pads, overpriced batteries (personally worth it to me, but buyer beware.) My kitchen and short hallway completely blackened one pad.
2) Yes, you have to sweep first, as it clearly states upfront.
3) Even with thorough sweeping, I found it pushed a black line of crud in front of it in many places. I carried around a paper towel for occasionally swiping this up.

The pros:
1) It gets behind the toilets - no more crawling back there on hands and knees. Yay! Worth it right there.
2) Both the hardwood and vinyl felt very clean, as clean as when I've cleaned them on my hands and knees.
3) My spouse will still be conscripted to mop occasionally. But even with my back problems, I can get clean floors, any time, painlessly.
4) It's faster than mopping. This is particularly true for hardwood, because we normally dry the floor with a towel after mopping to keep water from sitting on our nice maple floor. This step can be skipped with Swiffer WetJet.

Biggest pro: it works. Biggest con: $$$$$

My mother bought one, then mysteriously passed the unopened box to me, asking me to try it and tell her what I think. Well Mom, and the rest of you... It causes more problems than it solves.

1. It leaves a smeary, dull film on my vinyl floors. The user manual advises using more solution. So I tried that...

2. The solution is strongly scented with a perfume I found obnoxious. More solution = a stronger, longer-lasting unwelcome smell, and yet my floors remain streaked and dull. I read that Swiffer offers a citrus-scented alternative, but that's only available in an antibacterial formula. Did you know that anti-bacterial agents are deactivated by contact with organic matter, a.k.a. dirt? They're for killing germs AFTER you've cleaned. I use them only for their intended purpose and only where they're actually indicated, such as on food-prep areas. Overuse of anti-bacterials produces resistant strains of bacteria and will not get your house clean.

3. I had to change the pad before I got through one room. Okay, I missed last week's mopping, but I don't keep livestock in the house... my floors were not excessively dirty. The pad is too wimpy. And refills are expensive!

4. I was very attracted to the built-in solution sprayer. But the spray is very attracted to my furniture, walls, and feet! I couldn't spray the recommended amount of solution around furniture and walls without getting solution on them.

5. I found the sweeper cumbersome to use. I like the mobility in the cleaning head, but the unit taken as a whole feels unbalanced. And I couldn't get the leverage I wanted when using the scrubber head. The spray button is positioned so that sometimes when I grasped the handle, I accidentally grasped the button and sprayed solution willy-nilly!

Finally, I shudder to think of the landfill waste this product produces.

I can say one good thing about the WetJet. It has a ring at the top of the handle for hanging. I like that... If I were going to use this product, and if a pad were still useable past one floor, I'd want to leave it in place for the next use, but I wouldn't store it sitting on the floor. I would hang it up to dry if possible.

While the WeJet may be fast and convenient, it's only really useful for small jobs - for instance, a few muddy pawprints on the kitchen floor or an orange juice spill.

The WetJet is very convenient - you don't have to fill a bucket of water and lug it around with you to mop. The kit is easy to assemble, and the pad just sticks on to the mop.

However, the pad doesn't pick up everything that a mop would. You have to vacuum or sweep before using the WetJet, as the pad only picks up a small amount of debris and just pushes the rest around on the floor. I only have tile in my kitchen and entryway (the rest of the house is hardwood) - so I only clean a small area with the WetJet. Yet, one pad doesn't seem to be enough. They're also rather expensive, as is the cleaning solution (although I suspect you could just as well put PineSol in the container and get the same results). Also, the WetJet is rather loud when dispensing the solution, and it gets annoying after awhile.

Bottom line: it's great for small messes that you need to clean up quickly, but stick to a mop and bucket for bigger jobs.

I bought a swiffer wet jet right around the time when they first came out. I was familiar with the original Swiffer sweeper and figured this would be a good investment. Even, then I was disappointed to learn you have to sweep or vacuum first. It seemed to me that the Swiffer should do this as well as function as a mop.

Still, it was quicker and less messy than a mop. I don't like to be on contact with surfaces that seem dirty and the Swiffer Wet Jet provides me with the "barrier" I need to clean yet stay clean myself.

However, when I purchased a new Swiffer Wet Jet after moving, I was quite disappointed. Version 2.0, or whatever it is, requires batteries and they are not included! I'm not sure why this version needs batteries, but it's just another thing to replace. If the original could do without, why not this one?

Also, this one was much more complicated to put together. The battery area requires extra pieces. With the original, it was easy to put it together but I actually had to follow directions with all the new pieces.

The revamped Swiffer Wet Jet tries to look classy but instead looks cheap and plasticy. Indeed, when there are spots I need to scrub, I sometimes wonder if I won't break the shaft of this machine because it bends and feels weak.

As others have mentioned, the pads, solution and sponge all need to be changed fairly frequently. Although it depends how often you use your swiffer, how much dirt you mop up and how large of an area you have to mop, refilling these articles may cost you next to nothing or an arm and a leg.

Overall, the Swiffer Wet Jet is an improvement over traditional mopping systems, but it could be more efficient and if the company continues to utilize such inefficient "upgrades," I see myself parting with the Swiffer Wet Jet.

The PowerMop replaces a sponge mop, not a regular mop, in terms of what it can do. If you currently use a sponge mop, you will love this, as it solves the sponge mop problem (the dirty sponge that is hard to clean and expensive to replace). If you use a regular mop, this will be a disappointment. It is, however, much lighter and less effortful than a regular mop. If you have a few additional tools, and a fairly small surface area to clean (as in an apartment), you may want to consider it.

Those with more than 200 sq. ft. of flooring to clean probably need to stick with more conventional means.

In a nutshell, the Pros:
-great for light cleaning of small spaces
-fits well with a cleaning routine based on a Roomba
-fits around toilets and costs less than Scooba, even with the supplies
-great replacement for a sponge mop
-carry a bottle of 409 with you, and many of the stained spots will come clean

The Cons:
-easy jobs are easy with the power mop, but difficult jobs are still difficult (it does not solve all problems)
-need to go over the floor (quickly) multiple times for effective cleaning
-disposable parts are expensive
-cleaning solution is not the best possible
-unlike their competitor, they don't allow you to refill the solution bottle with whatever you like
-will require multiple pads for large floors, making it significantly more expensive for a house than an apartment

The floor does need to be swept or, better, vacuumed before it is mopped. We have a Roomba, and so I find it convenient to send the Roomba around the kitchen first (while I'm doing something else), and then come back to mop afterwards. Those of you already in the habit of vacuuming your hard floors before you mop will have to do the same step.

The power mop works best for me in multiple quick steps, rather than going over each piece of floor until it is completely clean. Quickly run the mop while squirting over the whole floor, then come back around again. The extra time allows the dirt to loosen up, so it's more efficient than going over each spot multiple times before moving on. This is very different than how most people mop, so it requires a change in habits.

There is no heaviness, no bending, no dirty water, no smearing dirt around, and each step is very, very fast.

While it is true that if you have alot of crumbs on the floor, the Wet Jet is only going to move them around for the most part (unless the particles are small enough to be picked up by the pad). But if there are any spills ( even those that have dried) or dust, pet hair, etc on your floor the Wet Jet will do the job. Altho, I think you will find that if you only just push the Wet Jet over a dried stain and not actually put any elbow grease into it, you will not have much success. It's not a miracle worker, you still have to put some effort into it, but if you do, you will find that it is much more convenient than using a mop and a bucket!
