5.0 out of 5 stars Great Monocular, January 11, 2008

Rooted around a fair amount, to find this product. Wanted something to view distant objects, mainly people, that was compact but be useful. Monoculars come in three ranges, very cheap, moderate price and super expensive. The super cheap appear to be junk, most likely very poor optics. The super expensive are more like camera lenses and appear to be much more than what I needed. Swift 10x40 appear well made, has a very clear image and works well in reduced light levels.

My experience is similar to that of Curtis Weddle above. I also have an excellent pair of Swift binoculars. Of the half dozen or so binocs I own, these are my favorite. That is the main reason I purchased the 10x40 monocular.

On the plus side, it has a nice hefty feel to it. But guess what? I can't get it focus to infinity! It seems if I could just rotate the focus wheel another half turn or so, it might get there. However, I refrained from applying a pipe wrench to it.

I didn't spend much time with it after discovering that. It kicked around in my closet for several months, then I gave it to my wife's grandchild to play with.

2.0 out of 5 stars Poor quality and MADE IN CHINA, January 16, 2011

This review is from: Swift Reliant 10x40 Birdfeeder Monocular 779 (Electronics)
If you are looking for mid-price quality optics look for some other product.

I looked but did not find where these are made before I ordered. Had I known in the first place that they are made in China I would not have ordered them. There may be some good products made in China but not these. I've had so much stuff from China not worth bringing home I have begun to swear off the stuff. I'll pay more for quality or do without.

I have a FINE pair of Swift binoculars that I bought 5 or so years ago that are OUTSTANDING in clarity and construction. I'll put them up against any comparably priced units and most much higher priced ones. Everybody that looks through the binoculars is VERY impressed. I sought Swift on the basis of my previous quality experience.

Alas and sadly, this product does not come near to my binoculars in either quality or clarity.

The field of view for something that purports to be useful for looking at a bird feeder that is just in the backyard is like looking through a knot hole. With a field of view of 288' at 1000 yards I figured it should be about 3' at 10 yards right? It is more like 6 INCHES and not very useful at all! The spherical aberration is TERRIBLE. There is a huge halo of blur around the field of view.

I'm trying to send these back. I hope I manage to do so without hassle.
