More About the Author

A pastor and expert who is sought after for his scholarly insight on the original meaning of Scriptures, Jonathan Gainey presents a manual for navigating through even the most perplexing passages in the Bible and shares the cultural and historical context behind it.

His work is founded on his belief that awareness of the customs and language of the ancient Jewish people will let Christians see the Holy Bible with brand new eyes. This book is not intended to belabor errors and textual flaws in the Bible, rather it is designed to bring to light the purest essence of the Scripture and show it the way biblical writers intended it to be. It encourages and reinforces one's personal Christian faith while providing scholarly resources that will be useful for teaching God's Word with a higher level of knowledge and confidence.

Finally a book has come along that provides insight into the area's of scripture that I've most struggled in understanding. With clarity, passion, and deep knowledge, the author provides a search and study of scripture that not only makes me want to swim but honestly has me actively "swimming" into the Jewish Depths of the Bible. With over 200 pages of well researched words, my only complaint is the the void that came from wanting to read another 200 pages when I finished. Looking forward to the next work from Jonathan Gainey. This is a must read for all.

It has been said that context is king, but Gainey shows through vivid examples that cultural context is king when attempting to interpret the Jewish mindset of the Bible. Gainey re-evaluates some popular passages and attempts to guide the reader into a first century Jewish understanding as opposed to a 21st century Western view. He makes some very interesting observations that challenge the conventional view. Though this book gets pretty deep, I found the content palatable and the reading easy to digest. I would recommend this book to anyone who wants to get a deeper appreciation for scripture.

Having been a work college of Jonathan Gainey has given me the opportunity to listen to many of his teachings and preachings.
His teaching has started a new way of thinking for me. Coming to the realization that Jesus was living in a Jewish culture, using a lot of Jewish idioms and phrases. We, who live in the Western world have many times no idea what they mean. I myself have lived and worked in 4 different countries. Many idioms in German translated into English will make no sense at all and vica verca. Even having lived in the USA and now in the UK I am dealing with one language, but different meanings of the same word. As time goes on I am starting to learn those different definitions of words. Besides that, many words, idiom or phrases have particular meanings that are connected to the local culture. Taking these words, idioms and phrases out of the local culture will leave many people clueless of its intended meaning.
Shortly after I moved to Scotland, the lady at the local grocery store smiled at my while I checked out and she told me: "See you later". Did she fancy me and wanted a date??? No, here in the region of Scotland it just is another saying for good bye.
Jonathan Gainey is picking up on this and is explaining the original meaning of certain words, phrases or idioms.
Knowing these insights helps us to better understand the intention of the writers.
Thanks to Jonathan Gainey's teachings I have gained a much deeper understanding of God's word and it has revolutionized my ministry.

Every time I read this book I think, "Who can I tell about this book?" I love getting a greater understanding of the Jewishness of the Bible and desire to share any understand I get with others. An additional author I would suggest is Lois Tverberg.
