Stunning 5th Effort,

This review is from: Swimmer (Audio CD)
Why this band has not achieved mass appeal baffles me to no end. Amazing musicianship, stunning songwriting andother worldly studio performances, the Standard have achieved with "Swimmer" one for the record books. From the opening title track "Swimmer" to the closer "Solomons Song" this band opens the door toward new musical adventures. Tight, magically defying definition, each listening invokes one to constantly return for more intimate experiences. They have absorbed many avenues of influence and reinvented the listening experience. The Secret of the Standard, besides Rob Oberdorfer's unique vocals, (bringing to mind at times Robert Plant's more delicate moments) are the magical musical avenues that Jay Clarke, Robby Duncan and Tim Putman bring to the mix. Simply put these guys are artist artists, those who create admired by fellow peers for their unique contributions, most certainly regulating and limiting them to a small audience. Perhaps in the long run the best alchemical setting for music this unique and special in an arena and time that oft times produces nothing of value. Beautiful, unique and with each new album, the Standard have set the Standard for evolving musical pathways and hold true to those values that make new music worthy of everyone's time and attention. I look forward with much anticipation for the next chapter.

the wait for swimmer was almost too much to bear. was it worth it? i think so. swimmer is so dense its almost anxiety inspiring. each of the standard albums are an evolution from the one before. where are they going next?its good stuff. we all need more of it. standout tracks for me: Through the Walls and Lines.
