Book Description

July 1, 2004 4 and up
With stunning underwater illustrations and a playful text, artist and first-time author Lambert Davis paints a magical portrait of a girl's visit to the beach and her exciting encounter with dolphins.

"Let me tell you about something magical that happens from time to time on our island. Early in the morning, just after the sun rises, my mother and I go down to the beach and wait. We watch the ocean...and if we are lucky, we see dolphins."
A young girl and her mother's day at the shore leads to an underwater adventure as they put on their snorkels and flippers to swim with a friendly pod of dolphins. Gliding and diving, spinning and leaping, the girl frolics with her dolphin friend and experiences the wonder and beauty of the underwater world. Factual backmatter included on last page.

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

PreSchool-Grade 2–As a kookaburra looks on, a little girl and her mother sit on an Australian beach waiting for a pod of dolphins to appear. Finally, the animals arrive, and mother and daughter put on their snorkels and flippers and join them in the water. Simple prose accompanies bright, full-page acrylic paintings. The dolphins and the ocean setting are lovingly and beautifully depicted, showing an idyllic world where animals and humans communicate without words. An author's note provides a full page of facts about these mammals. In addition to relating an experience that may not be familiar to many children, this peaceful picture book could accompany lessons on marine life or social studies.–Jane Barrer, Washington Square Village Creative Steps, New York City

From Booklist

PreS. Swimming with Dolphins brings children face-to-face with ocean life. Davis' paintings steal the show in this picture book, narrated by a child who, with her mother, slips on flippers and a mask and joins a school of dolphins. Sentences of just a few words per page create a lovely rhythm when read together: "Together we glide. We dive and surface . . . We spin and turn." Large, luminous, almost photorealistic paintings show the girl and the gleaming dolphins swimming and twirling side by side. Simple, elegant, and visually stunning, this will thrill children with its close-up view of a girl and her wild animal friends.

3.0 out of 5 stars Book was torn, August 10, 2009
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Swimming with Dolphins (Hardcover)
It was a great book that my daughter (2 yrs old) loved. She wanted a book about dolphins and we had a hard time fining one at our library. We ordered this one. We are happy with the book and its beautiful pages; however, the first page of the book was crumpled and torn. Very frustrating. The book was shipped soundly so it was something that happened in the factory.
