The best swimming book in the world since 1993.,
By Nik "cavanaugh84" (Athens Greece) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Swimming Even Faster (Hardcover)
There are approximately 10 "swimming nations'. US along with Japan, Hungary, Australia, UK and Sweden is one of these nations that have a rich swimming tradition and continuous participation in Olympic swimming events since the 1896 Olympics. Professor Maglischo comes out of this rich US tradition. This book is without any doubt the best ever written on the sport. For all of us that read and collect swimming books it is not strange that Prof. Maglischo wrote this magnificent book. The first edition of Swimming Even Faster (Swimming Faster 1982) was a best seller for almost 11 years and it was the best swimming book ever written before this edition appeared. I hope that prof. Maglischo will prepare for us the next edition of this one.

Excellent book....very thorough,
This review is from: Swimming Even Faster (Hardcover)
I am a multi-sport athlete trying to get into swimming. I borrowed this book from a friend to help me with my swimming (and once I had it, I had to buy a copy for myself!!!), as I am truly a beginner. This book nails down, in great detail, technique for efficient swimming. It gets technical at times, but I believe this book is a must have for swimmers (or swimming coaches) of all levels. Great book!!! Very thorough!!!

A must book for every swimming coach in the world,
By kazuto@mars.dti.ne.jp (Shizuoka-Ken, Japan) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Swimming Even Faster (Hardcover)
This is a scientific academic book for competitive swimming coachs. It covers various aspects of swimming: physiology, training, blood testing, tapering, stroke mechanics, guidelines for competition, diets, etc. The author E.W.Maglischo is a world-famous swimming coach at Arizona State University read many references, It made this book very persuasive. His first edition of this book was well received throughout the world, and made swimming coaching more scientific. This book is the second edition. If you are a swimming coach and want to be a better coach, you must read this because this is a world-standard book about swimming.

great for swimmer parents too,
This review is from: Swimming Even Faster (Hardcover)
i am a dad with a freshman son on the high school varsity swim team...this book is superb not only for the swimmer but also for parent(s) who are looking for more insight into how to help prepare their son/daughter for the complicated sport of swimming...i agree with other reviewers in that it can be technical...especially for a freshman but it is very readable by a motivated, non-swimming parent

I'm primarily a rower, so I can't speak about the swimming-specific sections of this book. But I can rave about the more generally applicable sections. I've used this book for several years to design training programs for various rowing events, from 500 meters (about 1.5-2 minutes) to 2,000 meters (about 7-8 minutes) to head races (20 minutes and longer). Maglischo's explanations of how to balance the levels of effort in a training program for sprint or endurance events is tremendously helpful, as are the explanations of how to periodize training programs and create daily, weekly, monthly, and yearly programs. The only tiny criticism I have of this book is that I would find it slightly more useful if the swimming distances included approximate times for the events. That way, it would make transferring the principles to comparable events in different sports more straightforward. I recommend this book to any coach or athlete of any racing sport. You'll find not only physiological issues addressed, but also issues concerning pacing and race strategy -- a must for anyone desiring an internal focus during racing.

This is a very well written, technical book. It is great for coaches as well as competitive swimmers. It may be a little too technical for non-competitive swimmers. Out of my 10 swimming books, this one is by far my best!

This book has served me well as a coach for many years, and I have given it as a gift to several coaches and top swimmers. Whether or not you care to get lost in the endless debate over Bernoulli versus Newton, this book has much more to offer. I trained under Ernie Maglischo and this book has served as the marvelous manifestation of his patient and persistent work on deck. I recommend it without reservation.

Maglisho has done well in detailing out every aspect of swimming. I can count this book the best among the many swimming books I have. I am very pleased and impressed with the techniques in the book.

Gives valuable information on all aspects of swimming.,
By Berk Oezer berk@etek.chalmers.se (Gothenburg, Sweden) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Swimming Even Faster (Hardcover)
This book is very valuable if you want to have a good overview of the technical side of swimming. It provides you with a good background on swimmers' nutrition, training physiology and style techniques. Lots of statistics and results of experiments done by other researchers are cited. There are also two chapters dedicated to designing a training plan but unfortunately almost no examples. This book might be more interesting for coaches than for swimmers but it's a good reference book for anyone.
