Complete Guide to changing your life, June 21, 2010
I've read many books. Some I've thought "Good advice, might take it" and others have been very simplistic and you'd have to be hard pressed to say you didn't understand the principles, for Example Dave Ramsey's "Total Money Makeover". This Book is not the latter. It is a detailed journey through seeing what we have become (not all, of course) but what is the typical human experience in this day and age. A view of what we could be and a list of ways to improve your home and work time and hopefully a tool to see what you should be doing for your best future. It's not a "do this and you'll be rich" or "Put 50% of your savings in to Stocks" kind of thing.
It is split up into three parts, Part one is covered by Four chapters that describes the condition most of us might find ourselves in using the analogy of fish and their habitat. Part two is covered by another three chapters guiding you through simplifying your home and work life and looking for balance in both. Part three is covered by another three chapters that talk about how you should see yourself, your life, your work and opportunity.
Pardon the pun, but it is not Shallow stuff he talks about. I find myself reading the same few chapters again and again to fully take in the examples and principles he is trying to covey. It is not to say that they are so heavy and complicated but mostly enjoyable and refreshing to read something that is not typically written about in such a basic yet precise manner as Colin has done with short book.
I first read this book when I was 22 and I've read it again this past week and I'm turning 36 in a few days. It's not a full awakening but more of a "oh yeah, that's right, why do I need all of this stuff anyway?".
One Line in the book that I can recall right now is "True Security comes from not owning more possessions but from needing fewer of them".
It's great read for those looking for a short journey of discovery into the reasons why we never get around to doing stuff that will help us break free from debt, clutter, jobs and lives that dont push us in the right direction but also offering sound advice for those wanting to be a shinning light in their own lives.
