Mind and Music,
By Avid Reader "Dara K" (Virginia, USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Swimming the Witch (Paperback)
Normally I don't read a book of poetry straight through, but Swimming the Witch felt so immediately accessible after the opening "Letter from Sussex" that I felt engaged with the "imperiled" speaker. Only in completing the book did I realize the title encompasses many voices across centuries. My favorite poems ("Utility" "Station of Loss" "Final Notes" "The Suicide" and "Portrait of the Private") are richly musical and insightful (e.g. "there are days when the body is as useless as the mind"). Other poems are far more experimental, and I confess I still feel there is something I need to learn to fully appreciate her work (I noticed that the poet has a Ph.D.; I'm 43 and only have a bachelor's degree). On the whole, though, I solidly recommend this book. (I stumbled on it by accident, bought it because of the title, and have pretty much loved it ever since.)

Dark Music,
By Inali "Inali" (Florida) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Swimming the Witch (Paperback)
I bought this book after reading "Nocturne for the Dying" on Verse Daily. It's amazing so far, but I'm not reading it in order, so I can't testify for the cover to cover experience. It's not always about witches, but about the experience of witches. The narrator's voice is like a ghost speaking above your bed.
