5.0 out of 5 stars 23rd Anniversary
Being "ParrotHeads" from way back "Swine Not" seemed to be the perfect 23rd anniversary gift for my wife, and true to the "Jimmy Buffett" writing style "Swine Not" did not let us down. When I first asked my wife if there was anything special she wanted for her anniversary, she replied "Not Really". About an hour later she asked for 3 hours of uninterupted time so I could...

3.0 out of 5 stars Ok, but....
I'm a huge Buffett fan and pre-ordered this book just because Jimmy wrote it, but I have to say I'm a little disappointed. This has to be his poorest literature offering to date. I'm not sure what I expected and I didn't totally dislike the book, it's just not what I have come to expect from Jimmy. Perhaps that's why he wrote it, but I really enjoyed his past books and...

5.0 out of 5 stars 23rd Anniversary, May 19, 2008
Being "ParrotHeads" from way back "Swine Not" seemed to be the perfect 23rd anniversary gift for my wife, and true to the "Jimmy Buffett" writing style "Swine Not" did not let us down. When I first asked my wife if there was anything special she wanted for her anniversary, she replied "Not Really". About an hour later she asked for 3 hours of uninterupted time so I could read "Swine Not". I had heard her laughing earlier and then moments of silence, then more laughter. To say the least I was intrigued. So I granted her wish.
I read the book cover to cover, I could not put it down. The way Jimmy presented the story kept me on the edge of my seat, always leading me to the next adventure. He shows the goodness of the twins and also their devilish side, but all in good taste. He also shows that all true life adventures can have very humorous side trips and that is what makes life exciting. Although "Swine Not" is a fictional account of a true story there is a lesson to be learned at every turn of the page. I highly recomend this book to all readers.

4.0 out of 5 stars Slightly Disappointed Parrothead, July 4, 2008

I am a dyed-in-the-wool (or should I say, dyed-in-the feather?)Parrothead and have loved Jimmy's past endeavors in writing and was looking forward to recieving this book. Cute, but really for the younger set, not the adults. I tried hard to get into it but just couldn't muster the love for the book that I expected. Still an interesting story and if you consider that it was based off of a real pig living in NYC and the fact that they dressed the pig like a dog is a hoot. Speaking of "hoot" - this would be a cute movie like "Hoot" which my younger daughter has watched many times. That's where I'd like to see this story headed - a good, clean, fun movie for the kids that I'd watch with them.

3.0 out of 5 stars Ok, but...., June 2, 2008
I'm a huge Buffett fan and pre-ordered this book just because Jimmy wrote it, but I have to say I'm a little disappointed. This has to be his poorest literature offering to date. I'm not sure what I expected and I didn't totally dislike the book, it's just not what I have come to expect from Jimmy. Perhaps that's why he wrote it, but I really enjoyed his past books and would have liked something more along those lines. It is definitly a kids book and a pretty good one when taken soley as such. I however miss the Joe Merchant characters and ocean adventures which this is far from. I would recommend it to kids to read and loyal Buffett fans just because it's a JB book. Other than that...it was an ok read for me, entertaining enough to hold your attention, but predictable and not really worth reading again in my opinion.

4.0 out of 5 stars pig tails, June 30, 2008

It's a light, funny, very short read. I think it's better suited to read along with your kids, as it is not your 'serious' type of book. It's a 'kid's pig tale." That being said, it was very enjoyable and will be a proud addition to all my other 1st additions of everything he's written.

2.0 out of 5 stars Not Great...sad to say, June 10, 2008
I really, really wanted to love this book, as I, too, am a Jimmy Buffett fan. But, I can't love it; can barely like it. As others have pointed out, it's a kid's book (barely) disguised as an adult's novel. Plus, I can't get past some of the continuity issues (blizzards in New York City before Halloween? Huh???). Kind of sloppy, really. Adults should probably avoid this and leave it for the kiddies. Re-read Where is Joe Merchant?, A Salty Piece of Land, and Tales From Margaritaville instead, if you want fiction from Jimmy. I'll wait for his next book and hope it's better than this.

2.0 out of 5 stars No, November 9, 2010
This review is from: Swine Not?: A Novel (Hardcover)
At the risk of being tried for treason in the land of Margaritaville, this is not a good book. I expected more. It was a bland tale about a pig. If it was a meal, I would have sent it back from lack of seasoning. Perhaps it was meant as a kids book and I missed the point. Yeah, it was cute, but it will not be a story I will look back on. Sorry, Mr. Buffett, this one is a bore.

4.0 out of 5 stars Typical Jimmy..., August 8, 2010

This review is from: Swine Not?: A Novel (Hardcover)
I saw all the reviews and still didn't care. Being a diehard Parrothead for over 30 years I was going to read it whether anyone else liked it or not. Despite what most of the reviews said, I thoroughly enjoyed it! It was like one of his songs... A simple story that was told well and with a spirit of fun. The fact that Barley and Rumpy share the narrative made it even more fun for me.
Maybe it's my feeling on literature in the first place. I think fiction is written solely to be entertaining. Sure there are some stories written with underlying social commentaries and scathing satire, but the majority are meant for someone to sit down and escape from their world for a while into another. This book was a great three day escape for me. Just a fun story written simply for an escape... Just like his music.
Thanks Jimmy!

Bad. Bad. Bad. Bad. Painfully bad.
This is the same man that created "A Pirate Looks at Forty" and "Death of an Unpopular Poet"? Please, lock up his word processor and send him out fishing.
