So you've heard about the swing craze taking the nation by storm and want to know more? Get the flicks Swing Kids and Swingers, buy up all the Duke Ellington, Cab Calloway, and Big Bad Voodoo Daddy you can find, and settle in with Swing Craze for some instruction before hitting the clubs. Vintage clips of hep cats from the 1930s--unfortunately interspersed between less thrilling commentary--will leave you breathless, and the clear, easy-to-follow demonstrations will have you rock-stepping in no time. The production values aren't as glossy as on a big-studio release, but, with material aimed at new zoot suiters rather than folks looking for fancy air moves, this is a solid introduction to the dance, the lingo, the culture, and the history of swing. --Jhana Bach

This video is a great one for those who want to learn how to swing dance, especially young teens. I started out with this video and have successfully began a great hobby of swing dancing. One observation I might point out is that there are 4 couples dancing. This shows the different styles between the couples. I recommend this for the absolute beginners...it's easy to learn and fun too!

This is a good video for beginners. It taught me all the East Coast basics, and I feel pretty confident with my East Coast now. The quality is pretty low budget, but it's a dance instructional video, not a feature film. Anyhow, they play a great song at the start of the swing jam, but they fail to credit it anywhere. If anyone out there knows the name of the song, post it here. Thanks.

A good video it learn swing dance with no prior training. Lots of beginning moves to get you started to be ready to go out and dance. The tape lays it all out in a easy to follow manor. Several couples are shown invarious forms a swing attire. The history of Swing video included shows how it all began. Beginners can't go wrong for the price. ---swingkat99

Swing Craze is actually a two-tape set. The first tape is a cute but somewhat scattershot history of swing dancing. The second is a well-paced, step-by-step instructional video for straight beginners.
The instructor is pleasant and is good about repeating the more difficult concepts.
This tape got me started!

Some reviewers have expressed their dislike of this video...but I have to say...compared to what I have seen...this one is the best swing dance video I have seen. It is clear, easy to follow and covers quite a lot of information. Sure it lacks the super shiny editing efforts and sound engineering...(the garnish) but there is enough information here to get you started so you can practice the basics of swing. It's affordably priced and the teachers are real and likable in their presentations. I checked this video out from the library...then purchased a copy for myself. If you are uncertain, check your local library and preview the tape...better yet...preview several swing videos...and you will soon see what I mean about this one holding its own!

This video is obviously for the beginner. It teaches the basic step, some turns, and different maneuvers like the "cuddle." The "instructor," Pablo is kind of inexperienced, as are the other dancers, they miss a lot of hand holds. It looks like they filmed the video in a middle school cafeteria, and the quality of the tape itself is pretty inferior.
After the teaching session, they break into a "swing jam," where the couples show off all of the stuff that you wanted to learn, but they don't show you an actual step-by-step. So if you have pretty good slow-mo on your VCR you can maybe pick up an aerial or two. Pablo does get tired at the end of the "jam" and it is pretty funny. All of the great looking moves on the cover somehow got left out of the video, I guess Pablo wants to keep the good stuff to himself. Basically, if you know the basic steps, and are wanting to add some polish to your moves, skip this video. If you are a beginner and are really patient, or just want a good laugh, then this is the video for you.

I thought that this video would show me some new moves, but I ended up not learning a thing. It's only good for beginners I think.

OK, let's be fair - the first tape is pretty decent except for the guy who says 'Now I am here', but if you want to learn the history of swing go buy 'Swing - a new retrospective' book. The second tpe is good for teaching the basics, but go and find a live instructor.
In the second tape, we had to rewind couple of times in the swing jams because it was really funny - no offense, but if you are doing a tape to sell, I think you need better dancers than this. It was hillarious - didn't they do any editing at all??? Pablo is really funny, especially when he gets tired at the end of second swing jam.
