4.0 out of 5 stars Nice combo with one hard-to-find title August 30, 2013

'Swing High, Swing Low' (Paramount, 1937) is a sparkling little romantic comedy/drama directed by Mitchell Leisen ('Easy Living,' 'Remember the Night') and starring the irresistible Carole Lombard at the height of her popularity and Fred MacMurray early in his career. An overlooked treasure from the era, the film rates 3 1/2 stars. Catcom's unrestored source print is heavily marred with age-related specks and scratches, but is still sharper-- with better contrast and sound-- than the public-domain copies I'm familiar with. The second feature, 'Till the Clouds Roll By' (MGM, 1946), is a fairly extravagant Hollywood musical/biopic (neither genre of which am I typically a fan) loaded with big-name performances (Garland, Sinatra, Horne, Allyson, et al) and catchy Jerome Kern songs. Well done, as these things go. 3-plus stars. It's been available from a wide range of p.d. distributors for years, and Catcom offers one of the better transfers I've seen (Warner released an official re-mastered edition in 2006). A four-star package at the price.
