Nice album from a jazz pioneer,
By
This review is from: Swing Softly Sweet Sampson (Audio CD)
I just received a CD copy of this album yesterday from Japan. I've had an abridged MCA tape of this record for many years.
Sampson was one of the leading arrangers in the Swing Era, best known for his work with Benny Goodman & Chick Webb. A quick look at the track listings will show some familar tunes that were hits for his employers. This band appears to be a group of NYC jazzmen that came together for this album. It is said that this is the ONLY time Edgar recorded under his own name. Sad, as I wish there were a few more albums in this vein. Audio quality is good for a 1956 recording date, just wish it were stereo. The CD reissue is packaged as a minature LP album release-the English cover notes will require a good magnifying glass to decipher; unless you can read the Japanese notes packed inside.
